What actually surprised me was the average of Morkel batting at 8 which was 13.XX. I always remeber RSA having a stronger tail then that.

Though that would make him almost good enough to bat at first drop for the Zimbots

I think people are overplaying the flatness of this deck. Good for batting once you get in, somewhat tough to get in on due to the bounce. Not traditional WACA fare, but it's pretty easy to lose wickets in bundles. This is what used to be termed as a "good" wicket.

Australia really had to have someone go on and make a 100, reckon 380 is about par. Really top day of Test cricket.

Seriously, can we see the last of 'Johnson gets all his wickets with crap bowling' guff? He must be doing something right; he was Aus's best bowler in a losing series in India of all places, was good against NZ and sensational here on a perfect batting track against a pretty solid batting line-up. Give it a rest and credit where credit is due.

The guy takes about 4.5 wickets per test at 26+ that is real quality

You never have to play him when he bowls over the wicket. That's why every dismissal he gets from a RHB seems a bit "soft". His best wicket-taking ball today was to de Villers and i don't think even he needed to play at it. Kallis edged playing a defensive stroke from a yard outside off.

I'm useless at cricket, incidentally . But enough that i know what you're getting at, it's really easy to sit and watch someone edge behind against a 145kph bowler and say "lolz he didn't have to play at that!!!"

That's why i said "seems" soft.

I really don't buy into this "Proteas choked again" theory, its just a simple case of Johnson producing as good a spell of fast bowling one can hope to see from a fast bowler at the tail end of a day' play, and one can't really blame any South African batsmen for that collapse, they were just blow away by some very good fast bowling.

I think its come down to a point where every critic of Johnson (including myself) just have to except the fact that Johnson is not the most orthodox left arm quick one might come across, but he is very effective and he is picking wickets, therefore whether he swings the ball or lands the ball on the seam shouldn't really matter, as long as he can keep picking wickets.

It's not just about judgement though. There's so much more to batting in test cricket than just playing every ball on it's merits. Watching Johnson on TV is not enough to know just how hard a bowler he is to face (or seems to be, I've not faced him obviously).

Incidently, I think Midge would be even more dangerous as a bowler if he had someone extremely economical at the other end (a McGrath, perhaps). The way he just keeps putting them in a tempting region, with both him and the batsman knowing that if he eventually plays one he's likely to edge it due to the way he delivers the ball and the bounce he gets would be even more amplified if the other end wasn't giving it away as easy as Lara Bingle. The batsman would feel even more pressured to score from him than usual, and would edge one soon enough.

Fairly sure no one actually thinks they choked. It's a good way to stick it to them though.
