The NZ top order is an embarrassment, it really tests your support for the side.

I think we need to blood new talent (who score at a fast rate). Throw in Taylor, open with Astle & Fleming. Drop Vincent (out of form), Marshall (out of form) & Fulton (poor technique).

Throw in Vetorri at 3? Try opening again with him?

We have to do SOMETHING, absolutely anything. Change is needed.

If you like changes, you can have Greg. A lot of Indians are fed up with his changes.

top stop from Australia overall, could have wrapped the Kiwis up a bit quicker but that man Vettori loves playing againts the aussies & was a torn once again. McGrath just brilliant, i guess Chappell & Lawson are feeling a bit stupid now.

I'd rephrase- Vincent (embarrassingly useless), Marshall (quite useless), Fulton (out of form.)

I dunno who you think you are gonna blood (apart from Taylor, who is a must). Fulton was picked because of an outstanding domestic record. We don't have anyone better than him who isn't in the squad.

Jesse Ryder would be a possibility. Don't forget Styris will be in the middle order there when he's not injured.

Agreed on Vincent.

Last few innings:

25
102
1
17
13
3
1

Not exactly a brilliant record.

Top Performance by Australia!!!

Great to see Glen back at his Metronomic best, whats even better is that he can only get better during the ashes :D. Pleased to see Ponting bat well again, what was even better was the he didn't fall to Bond, who IIRC has taken Punters wicket 6 out of 6 times they've faced off .

All in all, a Strong performance, and we're looking the goods to take out our first CT i'm hoping :)

He was pretty lucky that he encountered a Bond who looked far short of his best.

He certainly did look short of his best. NZ will be hoping he finds his top form for the VB series in January.

Ryder is definitely better. Just much more talent. I think even most leymen like myself can see that when you watch the guy bat.

Time for Ryder and Taylor to become regular picks I think

One can not emphasise enough how much New Zealand's top order let them down. Had we made it through the opening 15 overs with only 3, maybe even 4 wickets down, we would have won this. But when the situation called for application and graft, our batsman either threw their wickets away with loose shots (yes I'm looking at you Mr Fleming), or their technique was ruthlessly exposed (particularly with Fulton and Vincent). Serious changes need to be made to our middle order, as it currently looks at its weakest since the mid-90's.

Fulton has to go, his eventual dismissal's inevitability was matched only by its hilarity. He looks woefully out of his depth against quality bowling.

Marshall's confidence at international level seems completely shot, and he again got out to a loose shot outside off stump. He still deserves one last chance in test cricket, given his form for Gloucestershire, but he can no longer hold down a place in the one day side.

Despite our greatest efforts to make Vincent a Gilchrist-style opener, it just isn't working. He doesn't have the talent or technique to match his aggressive intent, and on any other surface besides a batsman's paradise, he is always going to fail. I don't think he should be dropped though, he belongs down the order, were his deficiencies won't be as exposed by the new ball. I'd be particularly interested to see how well he could bat in conjunction with McCullum, at the death.

On the other side of the coin our bowling is looking good. Mills looks like a completely different player to the man of a couple of seasons ago. Bond is still recovering, but a bit of match practice will bring him right. Oram and Vettori are as accurate as ever and in Patel we may have discovered a genuine wicket taker in both forms of the game.

Possible XI for SL and VB series
Fleming
Astle
Taylor
Styris
Vincent
Oram
McCullum
Vettori
Mills
Bond
Patel/Gillespie (depending on the pitch)

Overall Australia fully deserved their win. Their top order showed the application and technique that New Zealand didn't have, which set the platform for them to get an excellent score. Then, when it looked like the match was slipping away form them while Oram and Vettori were batting, they kept their heads, to get the key breakthroughs. I don't think they'll have any problems winning this tournament from here.

Bond was swinging the ball a mile for about 2 overs against Ponting, who played him very well.

Ryder could do with another season in domestic cricket I think. His list A average is still pretty ordinary. I reckon he'll be the man to replace Astle, once he retires, and really I can't see Astle going on much longer than the World Cup.
