Whatever happens now the morning session is must watch as Broad and Swann won't hang about while batting and if England are bowled out it is all eyes on Jimmy to see if he can do it again.

The fact that Smith dismissed 3 proper batsmen, two of them set, is already pretty insane. But to have done it cheaply too is just

Crims day but if our next 13 wickets can score the same as the Aussie first innings from here i'd be happy setting them nearly 300 to win in the last dig.

Pitch is taking spin when the bloke actually can turn it and the new ball is clearly still going to do something. 320-350 a good first dig, we should get to that. Australia will be the happier going in because of momentum but looking at the bigger picture it's not a bad day.

What variation was it that got Prior out?
Looked like a variation of the flipper. The ball behaved like a flipper in that it deceived the batsman by being fuller than expected. I think it was delivered in a less 'shoulder-destroying' way than a regular flipper though.

Lol, Jimmy coming in as a nightwatchman at 9 to Protect Broad is a new low for England and their negative mindset, horrible.
I've never understood the rationale for nightwatchmen at all. Why is losing a wicket in the evening worse than in the morning?

I watched most of the days play except for about the first hour. (The bosses day off so we had to go and buy plants for the garden) My thoughts on the days are as follows:

Harris bowled well first up and bringing Watto on early to bowl stump to stump was a good call from Clarke. Pattinson had a mare all day really. As far as England goes i don't feel Root was unlucky as some of the press are stating it was out. He looks a shadow of what he was at 6 but i'll come back to that later. Pietersen has always been a fidgety starter but he seems to be even more so since his return from injury. Trott's out was not something you'd expect from him. Its indicative of the sloppiness that is coming into the English batting. Bell was awesome. Untroubled apart from a stupid near run-out and the ball that got him was a good one.

Moving on to Bairstow. I honestly think that no ball has saved his place. His constant shovelling to the onside has been going on for too long and some of his pull shots were laughable. 66 will probably be enough to get him the next game as the selectors never like change. His actual dismissal was ridiculous. I realise he has hardly picked up a bat all summer, and that is not his fault but his failings are technical and i don't really like seeing them played out in the Ashes.

Prior got a good one. They need to look at picking Smith if he's going to bowl more (which he obviously will now) as it seems like a pretty simple thing to pick the backspinner. Aus are well on top on what seems like a great pitch. Though who knows with their **** batting line-up. England's batting has been rank since we stuffed India two years ago. Too many gimme wickets.

If we lose (actually even if we win or draw) this one they need to shuffle the batting. Which they almost certainly won't.

What the **** is up with the audio on the highlights show? It's really tinny and muffled then you'll suddenly hear something fuzzy; really off-putting.
