I can't believe he didn't make itwhat a man. woodville had 10 fielders against us one day because he didn't want to field, then came out and smacked a ton.

Sure it's nice to relieve pressure with singles but if the bowlers good enough to deny you singles then just don't get out and wait on the bad ball. With a day and a half to bat and a million runs to get you can do that if your mentally strong enough.
I'm surprised that Clarke hasn't come in for more criticism for his tactics as it became obvious about two-thirds of the way through the day that they weren't doing everything they could in an attempt to bowl the English out.I was at Lords, and can honestly say that whilst from one perspective the entertainment of the final session just about saved what was previously an incredibly dull day, from another it was depressing that the only logical explanation for what went on was that Australia had given up. It was shocking. I almost wondered if the only purpose of Clarke's tactics was to get his series average over-rate down so there would be less danger of any suspensions somewhere down the line.
Not taking the new ball was initially fine as a tactic if it was felt that doing so would keep the low scoring rate going, but within an over or two of it being available it was clear that England were managing to score against the old ball at will. At that point it became increasingly inexplicable that they didn't take it, to the extent that it went from being inconceivable that Cook would declare overnight, to it being an entirely viable option (whether he does so is another matter, but either way i think that the crazy last session has meant that Australia will have probably at least half an hour longer to survive than they might otherwise have had (as usual all the commentators arguing for 'pre-close' declarations were ignoring the runs/overs equation in trying to turn it into a 5 and a half versus 6 and a half sessions to bowl them out debate).
However today is going to be interesting in a number of ways. If the batsmen's efforts give the impression that their bowling on day 3 was toothless as opposed to blunted by the pitch (2 wickets all day!) and fail to dispel the notion that the pitch has died a bit and is rapidly descending to usual road territory then the Aussies might as well pack their bags now.
I agree with you on past occasions like Headingley against the Kiwis for eg....that could have bit us in the arse but he wouldn't have had this amount of runs to play with before either. If he does bat past 600 and Roots 200 it won't be down to being cautious.......it can only be to torture the Aussie bowlers some more.from what i've seen cook tends to be super defensive and leave his declarations, at least imo, way too late. may actually be something that could give us a chance to salvage a draw.
Na just tell him he has 20-30 minutes to get it and if he gets out so be it. Annoy the crims more to have to come out for 20-30 and only give the openers 10 minutes to prepare to bat.I agree with you on past occasions like Headingley against the Kiwis for eg....that could have bit us in the arse but he wouldn't have had this amount of runs to play with before either. Greg's right though, any cloud cover this morning and we should bowl straight up........leave Root hungry for his double.

Say it softly - I'll bet Root isn't really indifferent to the decision of whether to declare. As for any true batsman who cares about his place in the history books there can be no doubt about what he wants...Na just tell him he has 20-30 minutes to get it and if he gets out so be it.
Not getting concerned about your Avatar are you Uvo??just saw bell given not out and what the living ****
What is the issue with Khawaja's attitude? I've heard a lot of it on CW but nothing in the media other than this 'Watson faction' thing.usman's first innings and last year of first class matches have suggested he's had no inclination to adjust his game, and from all reports his attitude around the team his horrendous. not the type of player i want them to give test matches to in the expectation/hope he suddenly turns it around. the others, i hope they can show some guts.
Ian Bell doesn't "do" being given out by technology. You'd have thought everyone would know that by nowjust saw bell given not out and what the living ****
oh thats the least of my worries. there is nothing you can give me that will piss me off any more than i already amNot getting concerned about your Avatar are you Uvo??
IIRC all the India declarations had Strauss on the balcony calling them in.I think there is a recent precedent somewhere for England declaring before start of play. I seem to recall a test in the last couple of years where everyone assumed England would bat on, and they even said that batting on had been their original intention, but when they turned up and saw the cloud cover they changed their mind. Possibly one of the India matches, i can't recall?
Meh, either way....so long as Ian Bell is pissing you off then all's good.oh thats the least of my worries. there is nothing you can give me that will piss me off any more than i already am
You're right. It was against Australia at Lords in 2009! More of a precedent than i thoughtIIRC all the India declarations had Strauss on the balcony calling them in.
