Sadistic Blacks bat again
Manuel Ramprakash Challenge Trophy - Cricket Web Red v Cricket Web Black - Day 3 Afternoon/Evening - CW Oval

Dan Smith got in touch with sadistic side and elected to bat for a second time despite gaining a first innings lead of 425. Martin West then picked up where he left off in the first innings, snapping up 3 wickets in his opening spell, but Josh Ritchie stabilized the effort with another half-century. The second time around he looked sharp for a century, but on 71 he knocked a low full toss to short midwicket. Ash Chaulk (39) and Cameron Burge (21) built onward with aggression and confidence and even when Muhammad Amir got them both late in the day, CW Black remained firmly in control on 190-6 at stumps. The lead stands now at 615.

Earlier, in the second session, Cricket Web Red lost 6 wickets and crumbled for 195. David Kearsley stood tall on the sinking ship, but got only as far as 50 before he picked out Heath Davis at long-off. He was 7th to fall and the second wicket to Blake Donald. The left-armer added another couple to his haul and ended with 4 for 24 to practically wrap up the Man of the Match award, pending a Black victory.

Donald chases history
Manuel Ramprakash Challenge Trophy - Cricket Web Red v Cricket Web Black - Day 4 Morning - CW Oval

Allrounder Blake Donald went to lunch on course for a second century of the match, unbeaten on 57. Largely due his doing, Cricket Web Black furthered their dominance over Cricket Web Red. Donald started on 11 and swiftly advanced like a man clearly high on confidence. Within the first hour he reached 50 with a paddle sweep for 3 runs. Ultimately he and Dave Richards improved their seventh wicket stand by 86 runs and carried the score from an overnight 190 to 276. At that score Richards tried to force Nayak away off the back foot and was caught comfortably in the covers. The 10 remaining balls were safely negotiated by Zac Gelman and Donald.

Reds fight, but Blacks close in
Manuel Ramprakash Challenge Trophy - Cricket Web Red v Cricket Web Black - Day 4 Afternoon/Evening - CW Oval

Cricket Web Black set Cricket Web Red an enormous 718 runs to win the Manuel Ramprakash Challenge Trophy. The only Black wickets to fall after lunch went to Muhammad Amir, back on form, and then Dan Smith declared with 9 down to maintain the Black dominance. Blake Donald failed in his attempts at a second ton, and instead received a fierce lifting delivery that he could only glove to second slip. And later, when Dave Richards removed Jamee Gray for 58, it signaled the likelihood of an early finish on day four. To that point the right-hander was composed and classy, with solid technique and an array of strokes on a flat pitch. In fact, it has been a trend throughout the CW Red second innings to date. Both openers started promisingly before perishing within 30 runs of each other, and the Reds ultimately flattered to deceive.

Rob Dauth decorated his knock of 7 with a lovely straight drive, but was beaten by the raw pace of Heath Davis and trapped adjacent to offstump. Gray fought on with the assistance of David Kearsley, and after his dismissal John Heads took his turn at the crease, rather than the expected night-watchman. The Reds will resume tomorrow needing 520 runs to do the impossible.

Reds go down fighting
Manuel Ramprakash Challenge Trophy - Cricket Web Red v Cricket Web Black - Day 5 - CW Oval

The result was inevitable when the day began, but Cricket Web Red still had a bit of fight left in them. In fact, the morning session was shaded by the home side, largely due to the efforts of David Kearsley and John Heads. Both players scored half-centuries and in total they put on 109 for the fourth wicket. And they were only separated by a freak dismissal, when Heads hit the ball back at the bowler Richards, and it deflected off his shin and into the hands of short-leg. The young man was out for 52, which included 8 fours and a lot of impressive character.

He left Kearsley to soldier on, and Nayak stuck in long enough to see him to a hundred. On his sinking ship and for the second time around, Kearsley held his head high. He departed for 106 and effectively ended the match. Matt Smith took the catch, but Heath Davis bowled the bouncer than got Kearsley into trouble and caught at fine leg. Three wickets remained for the taking, so Richards delighted in securing himself a 5-wicket haul. Sean Bennett played some good shots but also took several risks, so when he missed a calculated slog to be bowled, it was no surprise. Dan Smith triumphantly claimed all three stumps at the striker's end after the final wicket - West caught at leg-slip - having finally achieved what he has so desperately sought in all his time at the helm.

Fantastic win. Great to win an FC final, and really pleased with my performance. We struggled a bit throughout the season but thankfully came good at the end. Commiserations to Red, who remained determined to the end and have had a great season.
