Dauth XI vs Gray XI
at the CW Oval

The crowd that turned up at the Cricket Web Oval was treated to perhaps the game of the charity tournament so far. Filled with drama, competition and allround good cricket, the Dauth XI and the Gray XI battled to the final over of the game.

Young Josh Forner continued to impress with the ball with a haul of 4-48. But the pace at which the Gray XI scored ensured that they climbed to a challenging 282-7 by innings end. Justin Rodgie had set the platform at the top of the order, scoring a composed 63 for 84 balls. The middle order - bar Garven (43) - failed to capitalize upon Rodgie's impetus, but Chris Butler and Dan Rai rallied in the late overs with an unbroken partnership of 51 off 39 balls.

The Dauth XI lost Watt for a frustrating 7 at 26-1 and looked to be stagnant against some tidy Gray XI bowling. It was soon after that Burke announced a change in approach. First he took Rai for two reverse-swept boundaries, then clubbed Butler over midwicket for 6, and the chase was on.

Burke went on to score 89 from 92 balls, hitting 6 fours and 4 sixes in the thrilling process. He and Dwyer added 199 for the second wicket, and the former raised a well-deserved ton with a fine paddle sweep. The two continued to fearlessly approach the required run rate of 7.3 and did so with great effect until Burke's luck ran out. Having smashed Butler into the midwicket stands the ball before, he was caught by Dobson on the boundary a ball later, attempting the same shot.

Bochat then squeezed a yorker through Dwyer and the Dauth XI set about into collapse mode. Forner, Wilson and Pickup came and went. By the time captain Dauth arrived at the crease, 36 runs were needed from the final 22 deliveries - 247 for 6. His response was spectacular. Dauth rocked back and pulled a length delivery from Bochat over midwicket for a first ball six. Two balls later he split the fielders on the offside boundary to score four more.

The assault continued to the end of the 49th over and at 276-6, 7 runs were required from the final over. Dauth had scored 22 from 11 balls and looked on course to guide his team home. But Butler stepped up once more. Dauth lofted his slower ball to the depths of the outfield, where Moerk took a stunning and crucial catch. Liam Camps entered with 5 needed from the final ball of the innings. A wide ensured that the target settled at a more attainable 4 from the final ball. Camps only managed a single though, and the Gray XI celebrated a close 2-run win.

Gray XI 282-7 (50 overs)
JR Rodgie 63, AJ Garven 43; JNE Forner 4-48

Dauth XI 280-7 (50 overs)
CR Dwyer 111, SJ Burke 89; CR Butler 3-61, T Bochat 3-85

Gray XI won by 2 runs.
Man of the Match:

Crampton XI vs Cameron XI
at the CWBCC Stadium

Not the high-scoring spectacle of the contest over at the Fardin Qayyumi CC, but the drama at the CWBCC Stadium was very much the same. The game was finished in the 48th over of the second innings, but proved a much closer affair than many anticipated.

The bowling of Gundry took centre stage in the first innings. He took 3 for 30 and played a huge part in limiting the Cameron XI to 198-6 on a slow wicket, not conducive to timing the ball. Indeed, it took a speedy knock from Stedman at the end to take the total as high. Stedman hit 3 sixes in 49 from 39 balls. He and his captain were unbeaten at the end.

There were surprisingly few problems for Nath Patrick and Daniel Towns negotiating the new ball from the likes of Rose and Clapham. The two forged a partnership 52 in pursuit of a low 199. Rose enticed a loose drive from Patrick to break the stand and then Stedman entered the game with the ball.

Smith, Collins, Dubb-Lynch fell to his medium pace. At 152-5 in the 42nd over the game was still well on. The centurion of the previous game - Pooja Bharat - strode confidently to the crease and then lofted the first ball she saw into the safe hands of midoff - 152 for 6. The intensity then heightened for both sides, though not in the catching department. Gundry was reprieved by Blackman at slip with Towns also having been let off by Stedman while on 70 earlier.

It was such pressure that led to the madness of Towns' run out in the following over. Clapham scored a direct hit from a brilliant save at extra cover and the Colts opener was made to walk for a crucial 84. Zac Ritchie dropped Gundry again in the 47th over and it was becoming very apparent that he would guide the Crampton XI home.

Matt Smith struck with the wicket of Kearsley in the 48th over, but Alex Crampton was in no mood for drama against his Blue teammate. Instead he offdrived, then flicked, to score consecutive boundaries from his first two deliveries. A late cut for 2 and a push for 1 later, and Crampton had sealed the result with 11 not out from 4 balls. Gundry was unbeaten on 15.

Cameron XI 198-6 (50 overs)
JE Stedman 49*, JP McNamara 42, AA Cameron 38*; PG Gundry 3-30

Crampton XI 199-8 (48 overs)
DP Towns 84, NL Patrick 24; JE Stedman 4-41

Crampton XI won by 2 wickets.
Man of the Match:
JE Stedman

Great win! Although my bowling nearly lost it, and my second duck in a row wasn't much help, either.

Bugger, should've had that game wrapped up. I'll blame myself for not troubling the scorekeepers.
