When was the last time a supposedly top-flight side had such a reliance on one batsman like we'll have?

Well the issue of Watson being in the side as a batsman alone is now well and truly settled...

The West Indies had it for years with Lara, India with Chokedulkar for a while and of course in the 80s it was AB first, daylight second.

England - Gooch
WI - Chanderpaul
NZ - Crowe

Can't remember a top side though as all those were a bit run of the mill/poor sides.

Hard to believe you were one win away from being number one a few weeks ago and now you have a very brittle looking batting line up.

How long till the puns about Clarke's back getting hurt from carrying the batting etc...

If we actually manage to pull something out of the hat here with the Ashes now...I'll tell you what, that will be one of the most memorable wins ever. So many unknowns will have to click into place simultaneously. The batting line up now will surely be Cowan, Warner, Hughes, Watson, Clarke, Khawaja, with literally 5 of them have some sort of question marks above their names. God knows what order will be as well. Clarke is gonna have some serious pressure to move up to 3 now, whether it's a good move or not.

Khawaja really isn't an ideal number six at all so even though I like the chap his place is far from assured.

We might end up having a 6,7,8 combo of Wade, Maxwell and Johnson (with 3 other quicks). Like Noble One said, big runs at the end of the Shield season is going to be very important for the likes of Doolan, Bailey, Henriques, Burns etc.

Uncle David should have offered to look after Mike's kids for a few overseas tours for the good of Australia.

I wouldn't pick D Hussey, but when you consider all the other Vics getting a game he isn't the absolute worst option especially in conditions that he is used to.

perhaps macgill or warne may be better suited to test cricket than lyon as well?

Ponting to come out of retirement for the England tour. It was the plan all along. Hussey tells him in advance of his impending retirement. Ponting responds with a preemptive fake retirement to let the nation mourn his departure first. Hussey retires for good, setting up a team-in-crisis scenario. Ponting makes his triumphant return at Trent Bridge, winning back the hearts of the nation. Makes a duck, retires again.
