From the perspective of someone who hasn't watched in years and started again recently.
Sheamus is Irish and looks quite Celtic Warriory.
Reigns has the Shield backstory and as my missus says "is bae"
Ryback looks like a monster.
Cesaro... spins people around sometimes?
Don't buy this at all. "Irish" and "roided up" are not legitimate characteristics of a wrestler's personality. I could very well argue that Cesaro is an Italian badass with freakish strength who loves to swing people around. Which is what his character is. And what is should be portrayed as by the WWE. If you'd watched Cesaro's push from pre-Wrestlemania upto WM30 and the Andre the Giant Battle Royal, you wouldn't be saying this. He was booked extremely strong. He beat Orton clean (albeit on Smackdown), was in the Main event scene and no one was saying they had a problem taking him seriously. people bought him as a badass. But for some reason, WWE pushed him back down.
Which is basically=strong booking. Lesnar's run before he broke the streak was underwhelming as ****. Why? Because he got pinned by Cena. And HHH. This supposed monster was getting beaten handily. Sure, he still looked like a badass and you still bought him but the magic wasn't there. At all.I think you're confusing backstory for some kind of actual established traditional story. Lesnar's narrative is pretty clear. He is the beast. He broke the streak. Here comes the Pain.
Cesaro just doesn't give any lasting impression IMO. I've probably watched a half dozen of his matches now and I don't really care about him at all. There are plenty of solid ring workers out there who are more interesting than him.
Just needs something more to his character to take him seriously. And I'm almost entirely certain, that something isn't going to be a clean title reign.
And I have no problem with you saying you don't care about Cesaro the character. I don't either. I agree they need some tweaks. But can you honestly say you care about Ryback and Sheamus? No one does. Sheamus is about the blandest thing imaginable in wrestling right now and yet people constantly talk about how Cesaro needs some huge change in character to "get to the next level". Just find it very very weird. People underestimate how much booking influences their perceptions of wrestlers.
