Note- After watching the highlights, how strange was it to see Kanaria arguing with Bucknor over him giving 4 byes as the batsman had not played a shot. Shouldn't Kanaria be fully cognicent of the more basic rules?
Kaneria doesn’t seem to be up on the rules of cricket much. That and his overzealous appealing is also getting beyond a joke. Someone needs to explain to him that if you pitch the ball a 'foot' outside leg stump (regardless of what the ball may do) your not going to get a LBW, yet for some reason he continually appeals.

Must say also that he was pretty poor today, did a Kumble and people may bemoan Harris and the two helpful tracks he has received so far in his international career but Kumble and Kaneria are experienced match winners and yet they hardly bothered the South Africans once in their respective fourth innings.

I think context is important. If Shoaib had told someone to eff off it's a graver offence than if he had just said it in exasperation. I'm not familiar with the incident to be honest.

Totally agree about consistency tho, it's one of my big bugbears.
He said it to a South African player, I believe.

True, true, and it pains me to agree with you.. However we march on 1-0 ahead, so hopefully Asif can put that in his pipe and smoke it
It's better to play and lose rather than not play at all. Anyway, I agree with you too. His ban should have been the same as Murali's, whose ban should have been the same as Shoaib's (ie 1 game suspension).

Frankly, I couldn't care less what the punishment is (if any) as long as its consistent.

I personally think Gibbs is being rather harshly done by; what he said was out of order, no doubt, but I really don't think it qualifies as racial abuse. I think reading it as such says more about deeply ingrained cultural connections between people of colour & animals. Even now in Spain & Italy black football players are subjected to monkey-noises from the crowds & over here not twenty years ago certain ****-witted English fans used to take bananas to pelt at John Barnes. Of course anyone with a brain would never dream of doing this, but we unfortunately do understand the reference.

A fine of a portion (or maybe even all of) his match fee would've sufficed for me.
Yeah I agree, a fine was more than a 'fair' punishment considering it wasn't directed at a Pakistani player, just a group of their fans, who from all reports were not particularly well behaved throughout the test.

Though, Gibbs bad rep didn't do him any favours and if he did not score in the first innings, then such an excuse could exist to get rid of him from the test side completely. He should expect a pretty big dressing down tomorrow, not fully deserved in my opinion but his a thirty two year old man (33 next month) and he should start acting like one, instead of the pubescent eighteen year old from the Cape who didn't get a ****.

the way you guys are defending gibbs as if he did no wrong is just weird

did any of the fans call any of the south african players a kaffer?
or any other racist remark?
did they mention his country or nationality?

when the umpires got with Gibs and amla in the third day and didn't give som crucial decisions that is when i thought pakistan lost this match. i was watching the game still utill when inzi got out in the second innings that is when i went to sleep and didn't watch any thing else.
pakistan has still a chance to win the series. but they have to make big changes for the next test. i just saw the score card and it seams that in the second innings inzi didn't use shahid nazir that much. which i think was wrong decision. for the second test the team should be like this

hafiz
farhat
hameed
younis
inzi
yousuf
akmal
sami/ nazir
shoaib
asif
kunaria

diffinatly they shuuld get rid of rana from test squad

Wonder who Gibbs replacement will be? Jacques Rudolph is the only batsman in the South African test squad but his lack of runs would be of concern so maybe there’s a chance for Neil McKenzie to get back into the fold or the two youngsters, VB van Jaarsveld/JP Duminy.

If you saw him bowl you would say Inzy gave him three overs to many, he had a shocker. Also Bob Woolmer said before the first test that Shoaib would not be back until the Cape Town test at the earliest.

You slept for a long time didn't you pal, the South Africans were still batting twenty four hours later.

I must admit I am a little happier about the remarks. Still I thought them wrong, and two match band was fair enough. Hope it is all forgotten pretty quickly.

Can't wait for the Gibbs bio when he finishes playing

1. that catch that was not

2. match fixing

3 this latest one

May end up being longer then the Steve Waugh autobiography:laugh:

You can also add

4. Smoking 'dagga' in the West Indies.
5. Getting banned and fined for a number of ODI's, usually due to his penchant of going to nightclubs the night before games.

This whole Gibbs (and the crowd at the ground) thing just goes to show that racial abuse / labelling etc in cricket is hardly confined to Australia - as some seemed to insinuate last Summer.

I find it funny that we have drug cheats playing in this Test series taking crucial wickets but Gibbs gets banend for 2 test over something that was ment for no one else but his team mates ears.

No its not right that he said it, I don't agree with what he did, but for f*** sakes, how about some fair treatment across the board.

My worry is that McKenzie will not play as long as Smith is captain. I could be wrong, but with McKenzie being generally considered the best captain in SA, and a very popular player, it would put Smith in an awkward position.

If he can't put his own ego behind him and play with his heart for the country then he should not be there.

Gibbs is nothing but an absolute disgrace.

What amazes me is that the fans were ejected from the ground for abusing a player. Heck if this hapened around the world, some grounds in the world would be half empty by lunchtime

According to the media, the "fans" hit players with a flag, swore at them, and racially abused them

Theyre lucky Gibbs didnt jump the fence and beat the hell out of them

Well we still have not heard what the 'fans' (I use this term loosely) said. I imagine it would not be much worse then what some English supporters said when Shane Warne's wife left him.

I can't understand why Smith did not simply inform the umpires, who would have informed the match ref, who would have had the GA remove the offenders

If it was only meant for his team-mates, he must think them hard of hearing8-)
