Think someone earlier in the thread suggested Abbas for the ODIs? I'm keen, though I hope he doesn't bat lower than 6.

The bigger surprise has to be Nick Kelly though. A long and very good domestic career, so congrats to him. Though if they wanted someone experienced in that age bracket (and importantly with a last-name first-name) I'm surprised it wasn't Tom Bruce.

Edit: I see Kelly is going to open the batting, so perhaps that's the reason.
That's a surprising selection. Wouldn't have guessed that ahead of Nicholls or Bowes. But they're a bit yuck anyway.

Ashok over Sodhi is good.

I like the squad. Kelly selection is a good reward for domestic runs, but Dale Phillips might have been close. Time to move on from Nicholls Bowes. The other opener option was more game time for Robinson, but perhaps needs more runs at Ford Trophy and Plunket Shield.

Having a batting all rounder who bowls seam (Abbas) means easier to play two specialist spinners, also agree with Ashok over Sodhi, but selectors might want to give Lennox a run in NZ A or future white ball squads where clash with IPL removes Santner / Ravindra / Phillips.

After a lot of "wtf what are they doing" selections I think we should acknowledge that this is a pretty good squad IMO. Like speculating over Kelly vs Bruce is infinitely better than "oh I see we're giving Nicholls and he shall not be named another game"

Anyway, since my favourite thing to do is potential XI speculation, do we think they'll give everyone in the squad a shot, or aim to win the first two games and then only give someone like Abbas a shot in game 3 if the series is sealed? I really hope we do see everyone get a go.

With Latham as captain and probably in future plans, I don't see them moving him from 5, which begs the question will he keep or will they let Hay have the gloves and bat Hay at 6? WIll they leave Bracewell at 7, or give him a go at 6? Presumably Chapman is Williamson cover. I suspect O'Rourke and Sears will be a lock for all games unless they get "workload rotation", whilst Smith and Duffy will probably be the unfashionable duo to make one way for one another. Unless Smith is replacing Jamieson and Duffy is the Henry stand in, with Sears and O'Rourke the "speedster" role.

Also entirely possible Hay may play as a specialist bat I spose. He was batting 4 in Ford Trophy iirc, so could play instead of Mitchell if they decide to rest him, and have Abbas at 6.

1. Young
2. Kelly
3. Chapman
4. Mitchell
5. Latham*
6. Hay+ (Abbas, and Latham to keep?)
7. Bracewell
8. Smith
9. Duffy (Ashok)
10. Sears
11. O'Rourke

No one from ND in the squad although I guess Mitchell and Kelly are basically ND origin players.

Really happy to see Abbas and Kelly get opportunities. Abbas does seem to have had more bowling opportunities this season [years ago someone here posted footage of him bowling in an aged group tournament and you could see why Boult and Akram were his heroes]. Foulkes is potentially unlucky given his recent form.

No Neesh either. Makes you wonder with a bit of time out from the WC they'll try the newbies and see if they can be built up towards the cup. if not, they can always turn to Neesham, Nicholls, Bowes, Sodhi et al 6 months out I guess.

No Neesh or Seifert. I assume they are now being considered for T20Is only. If Seifert had been on a ND contract there was a chance he would be opening next week, not Kelly.

I don't mind at all the idea of picking guys with a ton of experience behind them, post 30, to come in and contribute. Macewell has been a perfect example of how that can work. But they do also need to bring through the younger guys, which the selection of Ashok, Abbas, Hay, O'Rourke, Sears and Smith covers.

It's a really well balanced squad, obviously owing in some way to the IPL but I like it.

Press release said since CWC is more than 2 years away, preference was given to those with NZC contracts (so explains no Neesham, Seifert, and Allen).

I feel sorry for Clarkson with recent 100s in PS
