not so rosy is putting it mildly, there was a guy spouting that rubbish in the times this morning (Hobson?). 82*, 152, 98 vs Bangladesh make it about as skewed a figure as you can get.

Mal Loye anyone?

Why not, don't fancy his chances of scoring many against Asif and Shoaib but neither does Andrew Strauss (currently). And if by chance Loye does get going, at least he will accelerate the scoring rate.

On the point of accelerating run rates, What about James Benning? Very simplistic technique, which could be cruelly exposed at international level and I have never seen him play against real pace before but he does take real advantage of the fielding restriction and if Prior and Jones are ODI openers, then Benning can not be any worse.

Take out Bangladesh & he only averages 28.76 overall, mind.

Good shout. Surprised he hasn't got a call already really.

Do England really need an aggressive partner at the top with Trescothick or do we need a man who can score at a decent rate & contribute fairly consistently?, i would say its the latter because since Knight retired after the 2003 WC, i think thats been the problem & based on that i think Bell is the best man ATM.

I actually think you make a very good point here. It's important that England have someone at the top of the order who can score runs quickly, but it doesn't make any difference whether that's a new addition to the side or whether it simply means putting someone up there who allows Trescothick to play his natural game and be the aggressor. Bell could be that man, if that's the way we're going to go - but if that is the way we're going to go, then Trescothick has to be willing to stop trying to be the man who bats through an innings and start being his old self again.

I actually agree. Australia are playing Katich at the mo and aren't doing TOO badly (even with 2-3 in South Africa, which we all put down to Mick Lewis bowling slightly worse than even Kabir could manage). South Africa themselves are using Dippenaar, not the quickest either (career SR of 68), while India opened with Dravid on occasion in our last winter. And there's the classic Sri Lankan opening partnership of Atapattu/Jayasuriya.

Right now, I'd hope the England batting order which doesn't require Read to bat more than once in 6 innings - they've been bowled out too much recently, causing low targets and due smacking as bowlers are desperate for wickets.

The problem is your ODI swing specialists (Lee, Pathan, Asif, lesser extent Shoaib) well and truly has the wood over him. He doesn't seem to have a clue playing a new albino cherry.

Benning injured atm AFAIK

vis a vis Tresco's partner. It's all very well quoting Katich, but Tresco is in awful form atm himself and, if he stays in for any length of time at all, is scratching around and not taking advantage of the restrictions. By putting an accumulator alongside him we're putting ourselves under more pressure. If Tres was in form it would be different

Who would you replace Gough with from the current squad? And what other changes would you make to the team I mentioned?
From the current squad the only other option we have is Lewis & his pace v Afridi in the opening 15 could be sheer murder. That said a damp Lords is probably just what The Curly Haired one would've ordered. If Lewis does play I'd expect Saj rather than Goughy to make way tho.

Me, I'm wondering what Tremlett has done wrong not to warrant a call. I haven't seen him bowl this year, but his figures are pretty tidy & with Harmy broken it seemed the ideal opportunity to bring him into the squad.

Lewis in for Mahmood.

I am no fan of the Lancashire man, but how can you drop someone after picking them for the last match in which they did not get a chance to bowl?

at a guess they'd say conditions, but then in pretty much identical conditions at the same ground last week Mahmood had 8.1-1-16-3
