Collins and Borcich tear through Pakistan
Collins takes 7 at the CWBCC Stadium
Stunning displays from Nick Borcich and Adam Collins left Pakistan's form in tatters, as the tourists collapsed to defeat by an innings and 66 runs against the Chairmen's XI. Inzamam-ul-Haq won the toss and chose to take first strike in pleasant batting conditions. His batsmen failed to take notice, however, and a series of loose shots saw the score crumble to 174 all out from a position of 97-2.
Borcich bowled with fire and pace throughout, not backing down from the aggressive intent of the Pakistani batsmen. He was rewarded with a 5-wicket haul, continuing his blinding form this season.
The home team's response was quickly stunted. Simon Fitzsimmons pulled Umar Gul into the lap of Kaneria at midwicket. There was no crisis, however. Instead the CW batsmen played with confidence and aggression, and everyone got a start, until Collins (1) joined Fitzsimmons with a single digit dismissal.
Particularly impressive were Ian Markus and Mike Wilson. They registered 60 and 61 respectively, but did so at well over a run-a-ball, savaging good and bad balls alike from the Pakistan seamers. Both perished ultimately to Shahid Nazir, in a spell of reverse swing bowling that may see him feature in the second Test. However, the damage was done sufficiently to post a score of 345 all out, and a lead of 172 runs.
Pakistan looked keen to regain control in the second innings, met by a pitch still perfect for batting. And when they breezed to 46-0, it looked very likely. Collins was then introduced into the attack, and despite his lack of pace, his use of swing was superb. Seven of the next eight wickets fell to the Blue bowler and then he had Inzamam put down by Burke behind the stumps.
Borcich wrapped up the tail within an over, and Pakistan were embarrassed for 106 all out, losing 10 wickets for 60 runs. Collins had figures of 7-31 in the innings and 9-66 in the match, missing out on his maiden 10-wicket haul only by the gloves of Burke. Borcich took 7-87 in the match.
