***Official*** Pakistan in Australia 2016/17

Lyon isn't bowling well. He is consistently bowling 90 kph when he should be 10 kph less. If he starts to throw them up at slower place he would be a much better bowler because he has all the tools for a good Orthodox finger spinner
Thanks Warney and Slats

Jeepers, imagine how cooked Starc and Hazelwood might have ended up if we hadn't followed on and they had to bowl those overs without a rest in between.

What's the standard thinking about bowlers resting for a short period of time like they did? I think they had about four hours or so off the park before bowling again, maybe a bit more.

I thought the recent SA series was classic :)
Yeah, classically bad for Australia

Pakistan don't really think outside the box, so no Wasim. Nawaz will be feeling perplexed if he plays the second test and bowls a bit, as he wasn't trusted in the UAE against inferior opponents in what should be more comfortable settings for him. He'd ease the load somewhat, but don't see him taking wickets.

Long term they need Ammad Butt to progress to fill the pace bowling all rounder role which is a huge issue for them outside the UAE.

I'd bin Azam if Sharjeel must play, Sami needs to up his strike rate somewhat, but has done more in his short career than Azam.

Also Sohail won't be batting at eleven if he plays! :D
Well, Pakistan were once renowned for thinking outside the box and giving untested, proven kids a shot at the limelight, which worked out well at times but at other times it didn't. Ether way, we got Wasim, Waqar and many others. However, with Misbah, it's clear he is cautious with how he picks his teams and he likes having experienced hands on deck. But the time is right to strike, bring Imad back in. push Sharjeel into the team, like we both agree instead of Azam and see how it goes. Sharjeel loves pace on the ball and he could get a quick 30 or 40 and unsettled the Aussies.

Imad doesn't deserve a Test spot. His bowling is quick darts with some little variation. That's very handy in LOI, but useless in Tests. Out of the two, Nawaz would be the better wicket taking option. But seeing how he clearly sucked in the UAE against WI, there's no point in having either.

And LOL at Sharjeel replacing Babar. He's got a very limited off side game and would be easy pickings for Hazelwood. Off the little chance he does get going, the maximum he will produce is a quick 30 or 40 as you alluded to. That's not going to leave a big impact. Babar is a quality batsman, and will only get better the more he plays.

I don't see how Pak can make changes to the XI with the chosen squad. Rahat is the obvious candidate, but there are no suitable replacements. Sohail is a liability in a 4-man attack, especially on a drop in pitch at the MCG. I can't see Imran being a threat. Rahat at least has the potential to produce a random jaffa which may pick up some fluke wickets.

A definite need for a right hand "pace" bowler. Sohail is the only obvious choice.

Anyone following the domestic scene in Pakistan fill in the blanks, are there better fast bowlers around? Because Rahat, Sohail and Imran don't exactly fill us with awe.

There's Muhammad Asif...

i'd want sohail back in the side, not sure why rahat was picked over him
They don't trust Sohail to last a full test match and Arthur has said so. Its difficult to disagree. Rahat is way to inconsistent and fragile to be a long term success in test cricket, but because of some of his spells here and there, the selectors keep him hoping he will come good. Its feasible he may have a cracking spell in the second test and do nothing for ages.

Asif is 34 and from what I read online, he has struggled a bit with his fitness recently. This tour was way to early for him especially when you consider the other stuff.

I don't know any other right armers that would make an immediate impact, Adil and Hasan Ali are the only 2 names that jump out at me and Adil didn't look great in the world cup.

"We've got an attack that's pretty balanced and we've got guys that are sort of specialists in all areas," Arthur said on ABC radio on Saturday morning. "Like we've got Imran Khan sitting off who bowls well with wickets with a lot of grass on. I wouldn't be speaking out of line if I said I don't think he has got the pace to bowl on a good wicket here. But when it does a little bit he's fantastic.

"Sohail Khan comes in and swings it right arm, but I've got a doubt about Sohail's comebackability. If he has got to bowl, his first spell's very good, his second spell's okay, his third spell is tough and then you just don't get anything more. That puts a lot of pressure on our other units.

To be honest it's fair enough. You can't pick a bloke in a four man attack, however much you want to, if you know they're going to be useless after the first session.
