I'm at the ground and semi-regret coming here. Umpires incredibly pedantic pre-lunch and now even though rain has stopped still going to take another 10 minutes to inspect the pitch. So looking at the weather map prob by the time it will start again the rain will begin.

This plus Smith's self-absorbed moaning about the ball makes it feel like the crowd that have come feel like suckers.
Was it actually raining when they took early lunch?

If it wasn't then as much as I like to hate on Smith the umpire is more at fault and should have told him to get the **** on with it.

Beautifully worked by TPC. Get off the ground to stop the ball getting wet.
Yeah, as I just alluded to.........I don't blame Smith for having a crack, fair play to him if he can get away with it. Really really soft by the umpire though.

This is the most insipid Southern Hemisphere Summer of cricket since NZ and India toured together in 1980/81, when India had one batsman and Lillee could get him out with a tomato, and NZ had Hadlee and no one else.

Look at the three tour threads and there's about 50 posts per day between the three of them.

You can't blame people. There's nothing to look forward to in any of the series really. It's diabolical, this scheduling.

I missed the pre-lunch drama, but why is everyone having a whinge about Smith? Is it for appearing like a lemon sucker? If so, that shouldn't be anything new, that's just how his face looks.

Shouldn't the umpires be the ones to blame if they left the field early? I fail to see what Smith looking sour like he ordinarily does has anything to do with it,

I think people are upset because Smitteh wasn't running around patting the batsmen on the back then saying to his bowlers "Bad luck, old sport. Never mind, look on the sunny side" or some **** like that.

When there's understandably so little interest in these threads, it makes the **** posts such as those really stand out.

I'm intrigued at the number of soft, brain dead buffoons on here who want him to walk around with a smile on his face when he's unhappy with how his team is performing. It's not a garden party ffs.

If you think your captain should walk around with a smile on his face accepting mediocrity from his side, then **** off and support New Zealand
Yep, so true

They went off early because smith wanted to take the new ball but the new ball will be wasted because of the wet outfield. On the other hand he didn't want to leak runs with the old ball so convinced the umpires to call lunch early. What a piggy ****
dead set what a genius though. unbelievable it worked

Incidentally, here's one for the trainspotters...When was the last time a boxing Test in Australia wasn't played at the MCG? (if at all)

This doesn't look like the land of sunshine that Burgey promised.
Happily the rainfall will be washed away into covered storm water systems.

Tbf the highlights on Nine are better than any of the international cricket being played over this Xmas/ NY period anywhere in the world.

It only really became a regular thing in the late 70s or early 80s iirc.

Here you go courtesy of wiki, although need to wade through to check if each one of the early ones in Australia were at Melbourne, certainly has been since 1980.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxing_Day_Test
During the 1950–51 Ashes series, the Melbourne Test was played from 22 to 27 December, with the third day's play being on Boxing Day, but no test matches were played on Boxing Day in Melbourne between 1953 and 1967. Because there were six Tests in the 1974–75 Ashes series, in order to fit them all in to the overall schedule, the Third Test at Melbourne was scheduled to start on Boxing Day. That was the origin of the modern tradition, although it was not until 1980 that the Melbourne Cricket Club and the Australian cricket team secured the rights to begin a test match annually on Boxing Day at the MCG.
