His start was fine tbh. His average got crashed after 01 but he was god enough up to that point and played number of great knocks in that early period. Think playing at six also ruined his numbers
His start was fine, but hardly ATG. His immediate start was pretty iffy though, but on recall to around 2001/02 he averaged 44 IIRC.

Given the quality of Pakistan's tail, they've put themselves in a difficult position. They're gonna need someone to go big.

I saw a bit of these highlights.........nearly fell off my chair when they put Pontings career stats up and he was averaging 38 in his 30th test. Had no idea his early career was so ordinary, checked statsguru and found he didn't get the average up to 50 until his 66th test.
Last time Hughes got dropped, in the 13 Ashes, I checked statsguru to see what Ponting compared to at Hughes' then age of 24 and a half: it was basically the same. 3 tons, a few fifties, mid 30s average. 1999 is the year Ponting started moving up though. (despite the highlights showing Ponting making 3 ducks in a row)

anyway all this is a way of saying that there's not too many australian batsmen that have had a good start under the age of 24/25

I have no doubt that had he been able to continue his career, Hughes would have been a 45+ average batsman, probably ending up with an average over 50. Such a tragedy for the cricketing world that his career was cut short and such a tragedy for him, his friends and family that his life was cut so short. I miss the guy and he didn't know me from a bar of soap.

How much stronger would Australia look now with him at the top.

Reminder Victoria is just a regional municipality of the NSW cesspit.
Port Phillip District of the Colony of New South Wales, thanks very much.

Although I'm in the Wathaurong area.
