i thought id do a little weekend preview of each game every week so get some discussion going... given my tipping form, bet against every side i pick...
Friday
Canterbury Bulldogs vs Wests Tigers @ Tesltra Stadium
Bulldogs played absolute garbage in round 1 and Tigers were one of the more impressive sides of the weekend, so that should mean this game is a foregone conclusion. But no, Tigers will miss Marshall more than they could imagine for the next 6 weeks, while dogs forward pack could fire at any moment. Bulldogs start $1.60 favourites in this game but Tigers could easily win this game by a lot. Im finding it hard to pick the winner of this game but ill go with the Bulldogs on the back of Brent Shewrin's kicking game and Hzem El Masri's goalkicking.
First try: Dean Collis (Tigers)
Winner: Bulldogs by 2
Saturday
Parramatta Eels vs New Zealand Warriors @ Waikato
Both of these teams were first start loses and with the Warriors already on -4 they need to get early wins on the board. Parra looked lacklustre but definately werent the least impressive team last week. NZ tried hard as they always do, but their inability to win the close ones against showed up. Whichever side wins i think it will be by some margin, Warriors have a poor record in games in NZ where they are the "away" side and i cant see that changing this week. If you do like the Warriors theres good value in a 13+ margin paying $6.25.
First try: Ben Smith (Parramatta)
Winner: Parramatta by 14
Cronulla Sharks vs Brisbane Broncos @ Toyota Park
Sharks have their first hit out of the season after a round one bye, they come up against a very poor Brisbane side who look very out of sorts. Sharks have one of the worst sides on paper in the comp but they are very much in this game. Without Stars Nigel Vagana, Matt Hilder and Paul Gallen they have to rely on youth and some experienced heads playing out of position. Brisbane have made a few minor changes to the side hammered by North Queensland, if Brett Seymour can inject himself and take pressure of Lockyer Brisbane should do ok, Michael Ennis is the wildcard in the pack, hes an exciting young player and can spark the Broncos and hes going to have to this weekend. Broncos at $2.05 on the head to head represents good value and keep in mind the last 2 clashes between these sides here were won by Brisbane 16-12 including a golden point match.
First try: Phil Bailey (Cronulla)
Winner: Brisbane by 8
North Queensland Cowboys vs Manly Sea Eagles @ Dairy Farmers Stadium
Last weeks best team in the Cowboys come up against one of the poorest performed teams in Manly. If the Cowboys get it right they could rack up a cricket score, but if they dont show respect to the Sea Eagles Matt Orford could instigate a massive upset. Its going to be tough conditions to play in with it still being so hot, so this is an obvious advantage to NQ. John Thurston had a blinder last week but he will have off days and this could be the biggest problem for the Cowboys, Brett Firman still seems to lack confidence and doesnt seem to be able to take control of matches the way a halfback should, if this happens this week Manly may very well sneak a win. a halftime/fulltime double of Manly/Cowboys could be a good bet at $7.
First try: Ty Williams (Cowboys)
Winner: Cowboys by 16
Sunday
Sydney Roosters vs Melbourne Storm @ Aussie Stadium
Two if the more exciting teams in the nrl go head to head on sunday in this clash, Roosters played some great footy in the second half against Souths last week and Melbourne were comfortable against NZ. The key factor in this match is how Roosters young halfback Jamie Soward will fair against the Storms big foward pack. He carved up last week around the middle of the ruck but he will have a tougher time of it this week against David Kidwell, Michael Crocker and Dallas Johnson. If the forwards do the job theres plenty of try scoring ability outwide, Billy Slater and Greg Inglis looked on their game last week and i can see an upset if Scott Hill and Cooper Cronk gets them some good ball. Roosters will miss Adrian Morley, i still dont like the idea of Craig Fitzgibbon and prop and im not convinced Ashley Harrison will fit into the roosters style of attack yet. If he an Anasta can play their own game though it could be a very even contest. Melbourne with a 5.5+ point start is quite long, if they lose it will be closer than that, get on it paying $1.85.
First try: Jake Webster (Storm)
Winner: Melbourne by 6
StGeorge Illawarra Dragons vs Penrith Panthers @ WIN Stadium
Premiership favourites St George come up against penrith in what i think will be a one sided contest. Although Penrith beat Canterbury last week they didnt look that great, Gower and Campbell had their moments but the foward pack lacks both size and mobility, the Dragons big men should have way too much in the tank come the 60th minute and beyond. Jason Ryles will have a big match i feel, he let the team down last week and possibly cost them victory against the premiers, i sense he wants to mae up for it now. St George's outside backs didnt see much ball last week and i dont see that changing this week, with Dean Young moving to Five Eighth its pretty obvious their game plan is to bash Penrith up early. I liked the ploy last week for Gasnier to get into dummy half as much as possible when they were in their own territory, i think they will continue with that this week. i think it might be close early but then the Dragons will run away with it. Get on the dragons outside backs in the last try scorer market, Mark Gasnier and Colin Best both have odds around the $10 mark.
First try: Andrew Price (Dragons)
Winner: Dragons by 22
Canberra Raiders vs Newcastle Knights @ Canberra Stadium
Im really looking foward to this game, the raiders were impressive last week and their combination of youthful enthusiasm and experienced heads got them to a big win over Manly. A lot depends on the Canberra's gameplan, its fairly predictable but extremely tough to combat if they get it right. Bodies in motion running at the defence works well against the bigger teams, the Knights have one of the larger fowards packs and may struggle defending their own line. The raiders biggest issue is the lack of a plan B, if Newcastle get on top early there really is no coming back, Todd Carney has a big role to play off the bench if the game is there to be won, he did a great job last week but he needs to start showing his potential in first grade more reguarly. Young fowards Ben Jones and Willie Raston both has blinders on debut and will relish playing in front of their home crowd, i think they will both be up for it. As usual the knights will depend heavily on Johns and Buderus, both can win the match by themselves as we all know, but they need more support from the Gidley boys and the big forward pack. Milton Thaiday played brilliantly last week and the raiders defence have to be on their game to keep him quiet. Raiders are good value on the head to head paying $2.30.
First try: William Zillman (Canberra)
Result: Canberra by 7
Souths have the bye...
