What happened with the Reds is a totally different story, and I'd rather not get into the whole Super League thing.

How long do you give Melbourne? News Ltd will make sure they are always financially viable. I want to keep them, but they started in 1998. Eight years on, no signs of juniors though I may be a bit harsh expecting them to be coming up already. But the signs aren't good. Their feeder team is Brisbane Norths. No inclination towards taking players from the Melbourne comp (is there even one?).

However, I would like to keep Melbourne. I want them to succeed. If I had it my way I would also bring in Adelaide, Perth, Central Coast, and another NZ team. But it's not going to happen. Reality is a bummer.
i agree that Melbourne isnt working and probably wont last all that much longer, they only have 1 victorian in jake webster and no signs of too many others coming through, however they will have a spot in the comp while they are still playing well, their crowds are about the same as the Roosters, Souths and Warriors for the most part...

once they start losing and finish bottom 3 a few times they will struggle to keep their spot in the NRL...

Wellington Orcas ASAP... can't wait to finally abandon the Warriors.
expansion isnt really gonna happen anytime soon, with the GC coming in that means we have 16 teams which is an ideal number, i also think we'd see a side from Adelaide and Central Coast before NZ get a second side...

Simon's round 4 tips

Friday
Parramatta Eels vs North Queensland Cowboys @ Parramatta Stadium
A Huge match to start the round, Brian Smith has made some interesting selections for the Eels, which shows me he’s worried, Nathan Cayless is on the bench and to me he’s never had much of an impact when he starts on the bench. Brett Delaney is starting in the centres, while he’s a good player they are still missing Timana Tahu who may make a shock appearance tomorrow night. Eric Grothe is back but he needs to see more ball than he did in round 1. The Cowboys look hot this season, Johnathon Thurston is in stunning form and should be the test 5/8 if he keeps up this form, the little men are dominating around the ruck for Nth Qld too, if they have another big game they will be hard to beat. I cant tip either side with too much confidence, but on form Cowboys deserve to be favourites, they are paying a decent $1.85 on the head to head.
Result: Cowboys by 4
First try: Josh Hannay (Cowboys)

Saturday
Cronulla Sharks vs South Sydney Rabbitohs @ Toyota Park
Souths have been very poor this season and should cop another touch up at the hands of Cronulla. The Sharks weren't that bad last Saturday against Manly but they need to show some more creativity, they have one of the finest halfbacks in the NRL and this should be enough to spark a side like Cronulla. They still lack genuine strike options outwide with Nigel Vagana on the sidelines Phil Bailey has been playing the centres, I feel he could exploit Paul Mellor on the left hand side of defence if Mellor isn’t on his game. This match could be interesting as Joe Williams makes his return to first grade for Souths, he’s looking fitter and stronger now and Souths game plan will revolve around him, if he has a good game Souths may be in luck, but I wouldn’t expect too much just yet from him. Souths have been poor late in games this season, I expect one of the Sharks outside backs to grab the last try, maybe go for Darren Albert paying $11.
Result: Sharks by 20
First try: David Simmons (Sharks)

Manly Sea Eagles vs Sydney Roosters @ Brookvale Oval
Another tough match to pick the winner, Manly haven’t performed as well as everyone was tipping this season and I put it down to Matt Orford's poor form. He’s the key his week, if he doesn’t get it right the Roosters will win, if he plays well its a 50/50 prospect. Adrian Morley returns for Easts and will provide something different from the bench, he will be fired up to get stuck in and I’m expecting a big game from him. Roosters have been pretty slow starters to matches this season so Manly will aim to get over the top of them early like Melbourne did two weeks ago, it's not an impossible ask for Manly to win this one but I cant tip them given their first 3 performances, this is highlighted by the fact they lost to Canberra in round one and the Raiders have been well and truly thrashed in their next two games. Manly don’t generally get thrashed at home though, so look for a 1-12 to the roosters paying $3.30 as your best bet.
Result: Roosters by 10
First try: Amos Roberts (Roosters)

Canberra Raiders vs Penrith Panthers @ Canberra Stadium
The worst team in the comp at the moment come up against a side coming off the bye. It really is anyone’s game, I'm still not convinced Penrith are the real deal this year, but I’m convinced the Raiders aren’t. I don’t expect either of these sides to feature in the top 8 come the end of the season so it could be a four pointer to avoid the wooden spoon. Raiders looked sharp for 50 minutes against Roosters before capitulating, this is a match they do have a chance of winning if they get the basics right. I don’t think Penrith have the strike weapons to hurt them like Newcastle or Easts, but theres always a chance of it given the Raiders defence. Craig Gower is in good form but if Penrith win it will be a hard fought affair. In fact I don’t see many points in this match at all, expect a low total, maybe even 21-30 points paying around $8.
Result: Raiders by 4
First try: Rhys Wesser (Penrith)

Sunday
Wests Tigers vs Melbourne Storm @ Leichhardt Oval
The tigers have a much more normal look about them this week with Prince in 7 and possibly Benji Marshall's return, the fact Ben Reynolds has been named 18th man suggests that Marshall isn’t as ready as you would be led to believe. I like the Tigers bench this week, Skando and O'Hara are both struggling a bit at the moment and will be eased into this match, the Storm have a very small bench so I can see Wests over powering them in the second 20 minutes of the first half. Jamaal Lolesi's selection at lock is an interesting one, I for one will be surprised if he even plays there, but time will tell. Melbourne fell apart against Nth Qld last week and they will be keen for a better showing, Matt King should be back and he definitely adds something different for them. I think Billy Slater's move to the halves in attack isn’t working as well as Craig Bellamay would have hoped and I see this as being the difference this week. I expect Tigers to lead from start to finish, so look for a Tigers/Tigers half time-full time double paying $2.40.
Result: Tigers by 8
First try: Brett Hodgson (Tigers)

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Brisbane Broncos @ WIN Stadium
Matt Cooper and Ben Creagh return for the dragons this week, while Tonie Carroll is back for Brisbane. All of these guys are internationals and make a big difference to their team; Dragons have two massive blows though, losing both starting props Jason Ryles and Luke Bailey to injury. The Dragons backline is among the best in the league and if they are to win they have to play to their strengths. Brisbane are traditionally a hard side to grind down, so their best chance is to come out with all guns blazing with quick dummy half runs by Gasnier and Cooper, if they get the Broncos big men tired early they should win. Brisbane on the other hand showed they are more than one-dimensional this year with last week’s win. They were one of the most impressive sides in round four and another similar display could be enough to move into the top 4. Dragons try as the first scoring play looks a good option if they get early ball; it is paying $2.10.
Result: Brisbane by 13
First try: Colin Best (Dragons)

Newcastle Knights vs New Zealand Warriors @ Energy Australia Stadium
The biggest mismatch of the weekend, premiership favourites Newcastle up against wooden spoon favourites New Zealand. Both had impressive wins last week, Newcastle thrashed the rejuvenated Canterbury while the Warriors beat a marshall-less Wests Tigers. I think the Warriors will be in for a big game here, but the class of the Knights should prove far too much. They have class all over the paddock, Johns obviously needs no explaining, but Kurt Gidley is finally maturing into the player everyone thought he'd become, the back row looks sharp, particularly Steve Simpson. Milton Thaiday is shortening as a bolter for the Queensland origin squad with every match, his performances have been outstanding and he certainly can find his way to the try line. Warriors played quite well last week but still threw in a few of their old habits with bombed tries and silly mistakes. These problem areas will continue to haunt them until they are addressed and eradicated completely. Knights should win in a canter, ill go with a half time margin of Knights up by 9+ paying $1.90.
Result: Knights by 26
First try: Steve Simpson (Knights)

Canterbury Bulldogs have the bye.

Firstly, all their state reps are New South Welshmen or Queenslanders. No Victorian players in their side. They won the comp with a team that was basically the Mariners and Rams merged with other players bought from other clubs.

Secondly, all their players would be playing for other NRL clubs. I'm sure the Broncs or the Cowboys would have picked up the two you mentioned.
And they had their chance.

Like the old saying goes: "You snooze, you lose"

Ropati is playing 5/8 ATM so i guess he could play halfback or Benji halfback and Ropati 5/8. Its an option, not a great one, but an option.

Gone for Manly as this week's token upset tip. They can't keep playing horrible & the Roosters keep starting awfully. I'm hoping @ Brookvale Manly will be outta sight before they wake up.
