I usually don't watch the BBL so didn't know Shadab Khan is playing in that - explains his absence here. And fractured his finger.

Yeah Pakistan must be wondering how these two have put on 50-plus. Important runs for sure.

Blundell has a crazy record so far as a keeper
It's very weird still to me that guys who were decent shield players have had amazing cameo careers to date, even if they flop from now on.

Mitchell, Blundell, CdG and Ajaz were not heralded players. Watling the premium version.

Pakistan having a low target is pretty much averted, NZ probably only need to bat for another 45 minutes now to be in a strong position to win. Still not enough to reasonably set a target tonight though, so it's one of those weird ones where taking wickets might help NZ's odds as well as Pakistan's.

Start to think about setting a target, but we've scored reasonably slowly this innings (RR 3.04 vs 3.42 in the first innings) so we won't declare tonight imo and will probably bat most of the first hour tomorrow too.

Yeah will be a bit galling to fight so hard to set up 2 games only to lose to a Babar or other Pakistani batting special chasing 250-300.

Lose to win blah blah but this series would hurt to lose if it was off a generous declaration.

Watling has 3-4 great knocks and 2 ATG knocks but my only critique would be poor in Aus (2 tours) and couldn't kick a team in the head when they were on the floor.

**** me he was glorious with the game in the balance or all hope lost. Big contributor to the 2018 win against this opposition.

Also a match winning ton in SL the same year. Many decent specialist batsmen don't have as many impact knocks I reckon

What are you all thinking regarding a possible declaration? Do the Kiwis declare with around a 280-300 lead and give Pakistan a sniff and risk potentially losing? Or bat into tomorrow for a possible lead around 350-380? Obviously a massive collapse could occur at any moment and change this, but interested in what others think.

Yes and these sorts of players are so important - think I made a post years ago when our team was something like Vettori, Taylor, McCullum and **** all else, that that generation had missed out on the good unheralded late-developing players who make up the bulk of a good side. You always get a couple of anointed ones but they need support and not every anointed child prodigy makes it anyway. Early 2000s side I'd include Horne and Styris as later developers. Then that period where every domestic player with a half decent record that we tried failed (apart from a little success for O'Brien and M Gillespie) and our team was poor. And the better sides since that time have all been fleshed out with the players mentioned, starting with Watling.

So something must be going right. Of course the newest one in that procession is Macewell .
