*Official* New Zealand vs India Tests & ODIs

Hmmm ...!91 for 3, with Sachin batting beautifully on 51! The match is heading towards a draw, still Indian batters got valuable batting practice.I guess some guys who were predicting an Indian loss in this game right on the first day will be pretty dissapointed:frog::frog::frog:

The NZ squad for 1st test has been chosen.

Stephen Fleming (Wellington, captain), Nathan Astle (Canterbury), Shane Bond (Canterbury), Robbie Hart (Northern Districts), Craig McMillan (Canterbury), Michael Mason (Central Districts), Jacob Oram (Central Districts), Mark Richardson (Auckland), Scott Styris (Northern Districts), Daryl Tuffey (Northern Districts), Daniel Vettori (Northern Districts), Lou Vincent (Auckland).

The only person who predicted a loss was Rik, and he has a history of typing before he thinks ;);)

Sinclair is the unlucky one not to make the squad considering they have chosen 2 all rounders.....

Congradulations to both Mason & Oram for their call ups. I don't know how quick Mason is but Oram was bowling at about McGrath type pace at the ICC tourney & gets good bounce from his height.

I don't think they would pick both all rounders for the test team but who knows - I guess the final team will be based upon the pitch & which ever their preference is for at the moment - lengthen the batting (in which case Tuffey could carry the drinks allowing Styris & Oram to bowl into the wind) or some pace in their bowling to exploit any weakness (where either Styris or Oram would carry the drinks).

anyone know how the Basin pitches have been lately - I know they used to be dead tracks yonks ago & Sinclair made his amazing debut score there, but I thought I heard something about them being redone or something????

I'll warn you now that Mason is not a speed bowler. He'll probably bowl around 135 k's.

if he doesn't do anything at that pace I can't see why they would be justified in picking him ahead of Tuffey!!!!!

Tuffey has taken some wickets in the domestic game/s so far, and has proven that he is a strong into the wind bowler who thrives on a heavy workload - just the type that may be required at the Basin.

By the way - great to see McCullum get a score v India in the Super Max game. If his glove work was ok he must be early favorite for the 'keeper's spot for the ODI series. The question would be where to bat him - at least they have more than 3 ODIs to sort the order out, but I think they would like him to do a Gilchrist & Hayden with Astle, to allow Fleming to bat at 3 or 4.

However i failed to mention that Mason is extremely good at keeping his line & length ala Glenn McGrath, infact on the news tonight they referred him to being similar in style to McGrath. Both Dipak Patel & Mark Greatbatch said he was a good selection, plus he's got 3 or 4 seasons of first class experience.

I mean...you don't dimiss Tendulkar, Sehwag & Dravid & also keep a good economy in two innings without having a bit talent about you. I hope he does play in the 1st test.

I think I read he was 28 - so it could be a stop gap measure re injuries.........

as an aside it will be interesting to see how Wilson's return goes. Could be another factor for the OD side as yet another allrounder!!!! Mind you I remember some of those innings with him & Cairns over here a few years ago when they took to the SA bowlers - luverly stuff!!!! What's he bowling these days - he used to be med/fast until he did his ankle, then I heard he went to Off spin. If he does any good he could be an outside chance re the future test squad - but he too is in his late 20's isn't he????

I thought so - may be a bit late to resurect his international career especially after such a long lay off from the game.

We need to develop the youngsters we have such as Oram, Butler, Tuffey & Franklin - they will be in their mid - late 20's in another 3 - 5 years when the likes of Cairns, O'Connor & possibly Bond will be winding down / finished.

Even b4 then they have to get the mix right re the OD side re the likes of Hitchcock & Mills who are both in their mid - late 20's already I think......

But as an ex-Al Black I expect he's fitter than anyone else in the NZ team.

And you have a habbit of trying to find something wrong with people's comments after they have been made...I said that as a question like "maybe CD will win" When India were all out and CD were 100-1...

In the past, that used to be true 9 times out of 10. Whenever India collapsed in the first innings and conceded a big lead, they used to lie down and wait to die(or be killed). This team, however, has been showing some spunk, some steel and doesn't quit that easily.
