Wilson IMO is a big-match player. The tougher it gets, the easier it will be for him. As far as pressure is concerned..he's done it all before with the All Blacks & to some extent cricket so he'll be used to it.
That's just a ******** thing to say frankly. Anyone can be a big match player. You make Wilson out to be an absolute legend who will never falter to pressure. 8-)

AMAZING INNINGS! Watched it al on Fox Sports, it was just carnage off Murali's bowling. Fleming was hitting it so cleanly and playing good proper shots rather than timing.

Great innings Stephen Fleming! Well done New Zealand.

Warne's batting has been pretty disappointing since his return, he's a pretty weak number 8 for Australia (especially as it is Australia).
It hasn't been great, but this summer has been okay. He got a test 50 against New Zealand, and batted pretty well under the circumstances today before the run out.

It will be interesting to see how the Murali/Warne partnership (or competition) goes in the last two games. Warne bowled a fair bit better today, although Murali never got a chance to get going really.

I can't wait to see the highlights...unfortunately I had to play cricket myself today.

I suppose the FICA team have the excuse of hardly getting match practice or anything..and to be fair, some of them have not played for over 4 months or so. But still..there's some quality players in that team & NZ utterly destroyed them.

Murali - 3.1 overs for 57 says it all.

Brilliant innings from Fleming.

Warne said it was the cleanest hitting he has ever seen in his 15 years of cricket.

Our ODI side looks darn settled. Astle and Fleming are proving to be a lethal opening partnership, while Sinclair and Marshall round off a solid top order. There is firepower in the middle order with Cairns, Styris and Oram while McCullum provides flexibility to the lineup. Mills and Tuffey are forming a fine opening attack with great lines, while Oram, Cairns and Wilson are more than adequate change bowlers. Isn't it great to see Vettori back to his best again?

Yup, Vettori looks superb at the moment...im relieved we didn't throw him aside when he was struggling with injuries & form.

Still not convinced about Mills, but I will say that he has improved alot in the last 6 months or so.

Hopefully we can translate a bit of this ODI form into our test cricket.
The ODI series against Australia especially is going to be a beaut.

I didn't catch the commentary live, but I heard from someone that Gavin Larsen suggested that Wilson is more of a opening bowler instead of a change bowler because of the great seam position when he lets the ball go. Can Wilson swing the ball?

If Wilson does perform well in this series, it would be difficult to find a place for him with Oram fit. I'm not 100% about Mills as an opening bowler as well as he tends to give up a 4-ball in most overs. I guess the final bowling spot will be decided between those two coming mid-Feb. And if Bond becomes available as well....:D

The reason why Wilson was a better choice than Canning is because Wilson can bowl with some pace & also extract bounce.

Bowlers like Canning & Graeme Aldridge will do NZ no good when they tour the sub-continent.

Tim,

Who would you have for that 3rd seamer role (assuming Oram is chosen to bat 6 and 4th seamer) in the Test team against Australia. There are three obvious options in Butler, Franklin and of course Wilson. Franklin has been in brilliant form since his "ODI snubbing" and is also handy with the bat. Butler hasn't set the world alight in the domestic competitions, and he just doesn't have enough skills with the ball to command a place in the Test team yet IMO. Wilson has impressed me this season, he's been bowling at a good pace (130-140 today), and is very accurate unlike Franklin who struggles if the ball doesn't swing. Wilson would also be very useful coming in at 8, below McCullum and above Vettori.

A partner for Tuffey is the most serious issue at the moment. Definates would be:

Tuffey
Oram
Vettori

I suppose it would be between Franklin, Butler & Wilson. Apparently Wilson impressed last week against Canterbury when he removed Astle, McMillan & McCullum to help win the game for Otago.

I guess by the time Australia arrive, the State Championship will be near its end & by then..hopefully 1 of those 3 would have put their hand up for selection.

I read that Wilson's delivery to Astle was an absolute jaffa.

What do you think about putting Oram at 6 permanently though? I don't think he has much of a future as a 3rd seamer as his bowling in Tests is becoming more and more ineffective. His batting has definitely come of age, and I think he is upto the challenges of batting at 6 on the international stage.

Forgetting Mills?
