*Official* New Zealand tour of India 2024

Not having Sears to call on is definitely a loss for NZ, was great having the option to bring him in and give O'Rourke a breather in at least one of the two tests. I'm hoping Southee can shoulder more workload with the older ball and find a way to dry runs up, while using WOR in short spells. Ajaz and Phillips are unlikely to keep a complete lid on the scoring though they'll probably pick up more wickets as the series goes on. Finding ways to get wickets with the older ball in the post-Wagner world remains a work in progress.

Should New Zealand try a horses for courses approach? I think we make Latham Keep, that way we can drop the keeper and play 3 seamers and 3 spinners, maybe bring in Santner for the WK?

edit, without Williamson its a risk playing 1 less batter, but we need to be creative to try win.

I wouldn't take Sundar. If it's a turner play Kuldeep/Axar.
But team management is looking to play Sundar in place of Kuldeep as the latter didn't provide any control in the last game and was most expensive. Plus they feel Sundar can add with the bat as well, which can be important, given India's lower order contributed absolutely nothing last test. Was blown away twice.

Akash over Siraj is still not certain, neither is Sarfraz over Rahul. But Sundar over Kuldeep is all set to happen based on everything said and done by TM so far.

Mostly agree with this, the batting has been pretty flaky but the onus is on them to get more consistent. In these conditions at least don’t think Blundell will be that big a loss if he sits out. If Sodhi had a bit more to offer with the bat he’d be a good pick.

On Rachin, good on him for using his CSK connection and practicing ahead of the tour in Chennai. Showing his mates that it’s possible to work on your test game in the middle of all the franchise stuff, and also NZC that they really should bring the A tours back.

This isn't a bad shout. Normal logic would dictate that making your captain keep and open the batting would be too much, but he's not scoring runs so it really wouldn't lose a lot of output for us. I wouldn't go Santner, however, I'd back Blundell to cover him in runs and you already have two LAers in the side, plus may play Sodhi for Southee as well who turns it that way. Chapman would be a dark horse to play, pretty solid player of spin and his nemesis - short bowling - wouldn't be as much of a factor.

Fair enough too. I'm a KD fan but if it's a turner, the two guys with 800 wkts between them should suffice with Sunder to pick up the scraps. We need his batting more this time around.

They seem to want a defensive spinner to contain. They don't want a situation like Southee Ravindra smashing spinners for 64 runs in 4 overs and putting together a 150 run partnership in no time.

Plus extra lower order batting for India can be decisive.

It is a risky move because it means Ashwin and Jadeja have to get the bulk of the wickets.

Toss won't matter much on a proper turner because ball will turn from day 1.

Not like the old days when pitch used to be flat for 2 days before breaking up. It gave all the advantage to the team batting 1st.

Hope it is a raging turner. Usually because I find them fun from a neutral watcher pov. But in this case, also as the potential randomness would slightly increase NZs very slim chances.

A win for New Zealand here will drop India WTC % to 62.8, while Australia is just behind with 62.5. Go NZ 😉

Oh yeah, if India drop Sarfaraz after his 150 then they deserve to get hammered

Have to admit I'm not sure who I'd pick after Henry, Ajaz, Phillips in the bowling attack here. I want O'Rourke though I'm paranoid he's going to get injured. Then there's space for one of Southee, Santner, Sodhi, depending on what you think the pitch will do.

They'll probably stick with the same attack as last time.
