****! Well the streak had to end sometime I guess but this was so unexpected, very impressive from New Zealand!

Congratulations to NZ and the fans on here for an epic win.

This was on the cards for a while as others have said - only so long you can keep relying on the lower order and even tail at times for runs.

We have two batsmen in the top 5 averaging sub 30 for extended periods.
To compound that we often pick KL Rahul, who averages about 35 with the bulk of that being his opening stints.
And now Rohit seems to have joined that crowd too.

Sarfaraz is also a bit of a mystery - he’s definitely going to be very hit and miss (we have Pant already…) but for a batsman to need to hide down in 6 and at times 7 (regardless of whether or not it’s his decision) is seriously concerning.

We have too many stroke players and not enough guys who both have the mental ability and technical capacity to grind out an innings.

The headline on cricinfo says 'India were short of confidence against spin'.

That's crazy to me. You have one of the world's best LA spinners, world's best offies (two of them), one very good left arm unorthodox, you literally have all the time in the world in the nets to get it right against these guys and replicate - or actually have something tougher - what you're coming up against. You probably have a bunch of guys you can access in the nets in most places in India, too. Most, if not all, sides don't do that. We can't face Kuldeep before we play the 1st Test, or anything like him. Glenn Phillips is not Ashwin nor Washington. There's no one at Lincoln on a 5 degree day in September that can replicate what we're going into. Yet we looked like the better players of left-arm spin?

If India were short on confidence it's because they didn't set themselves for this series - their minds were on Perth next month.

It’s a weird argument from Cricinfo to say the Indians batsmen were ‘short on confidence’ against spin when you look at the shots they got out to in that first innings: they had plenty of confidence, plenty of exuberance, they just didn’t execute. This was exemplified by Kohli’s ugly swipe to a full toss which saw him castled.
In regards to where their heads have been at in this series, more than likely they just underestimated their opposition. It’s not just the Indian team that expected them to thump the BC’s in this series, pretty much everyone else - except the BC’s themselves - expected that as well. This is a huge upset. India getting bowled out for 46 laid the foundation, and stung India’s pride. When they looked to make amends in this test they played rash shots in the first innings rather than showing the NZ spinners - and the game - due respect, and paid the price.
Hubris at play again. Excessive pride and self confidence ‘in defiance of the gods, leading to nemesis’. The cricketing gods smiled on NZ with a ‘great toss to lose’ in the first test.
In the 3rd test, how will India respond after seeing themselves dominated firstly by seam, and then by spin, and what kind of surface will be served up?

Stead comes across in statements as content to be in the midfield (to put it kindly) and selects his teams with a strong sense of sentimentality instead of ruthless results maximisation. There has also been chat for a long time that he has little power in the dressing room.

NZ sports fans, who are mostly far from CW nerds (to put it kindly), culturally despise all of the above.

If KW is fit for the 3rd test, does he play, and at whose expense? Ordinarily it would be a fait accompli that he would come in for Will Young. But now….?
If Henry is fit, surely he comes back into the side but - again - at whose expense?
Some intriguing selection permutations to ponder.

I don't think there is any point in bringing KW in now. I would be sending Henry, O'Rourke back home to prepare for the next séries. Give Duffy and Chapman some game time.

Yes, he will obviously come in. Young's done OK in these 2 tests and deserves his fair share of the congratulations going around. But if KW's fit, the only way Young plays is if the selectors decide Young is a better bet at 5 than Mitchell.

If Henry's fit then I imagine he'll come in for Southee. There was talk about Tim not playing all the tests and that was before he stood down from the captaincy. While it's been nice to see Tim not being a total passenger he's still only taken 3 wickets this series. NZ needs more from the new ball.

But more seriously, wouldn't have bet on this outcome in a month of sundays. I'm sure winning the toss was pretty vital and given our recent ineptitude at that, even getting the call right was a surprise.

Changes were necessary after Sri Lanka. Just changing the captain didn't seem nearly enough, but Latham - or at least someone behind the scenes - must get some credit here as the mentality seems to have significantly improved.

KW plays if fit. Young is a good player but he hasn't crushed his way into the team and certainly not ahead of one of the big dogs of this generation.
