Zimbabwe contracts reviewed after abject performances

Zimbabwe Cricket are reported to be revising player contracts in response to the team's dreadful on-field performances.
New contracts, which are due to start on September 1 when the existing ones expire, should have been sent to the players' representative by now, but a report in today's Zimbabwe-based Independent claims that the board is rethinking its position in the light of recent defeats. The contracted players enjoy a number of benefits which include sponsored cars, fuel and mobile phones. In a country with massive unemployment, such a privileged position is extremely valuable.
But the board are considering reducing the number of contracted players - some sources claim that as many as 28 are on some form of central contract - with only senior players and the captain getting traditional deals. Others would be offered short-term, performance-based terms. "You can't just wake up and give contracts," a source close to the negotiations told the newspaper. "A contract is an important document. It is a commitment that one makes that they will care for someone's welfare. But you have to make sure that you get the best out of the contracted person.
"What we are getting is the opposite. These players are paid to play for five days but they give us two days. You can't just give contracts in the light of the scenario we have. We've got to look at other ways of doing it."
Several sources have told Cricinfo that some of the younger players appear to be operating in a comfort zone, safe in the knowledge that they had contracts and were unlikely to be replaced. This had led to them becoming arrogant and complacent. One recently capped player, described as "unapproachable and with a massive attitude", was seen to respond to some basic advice offered by a senior overseas professional by turning his back and walking away.
Wilfred Mukondiwa, the board's human resources manager, told the newspaper that no firm decision had been made. "We are very much aware that the current contracts expire on August 31, and an appropriate decision will be taken at the right time."
Who is the young player with the massive attitude? Something tells me it could be one of Ewing, Mpofu or Dabengwa.
Well played Bondy and the rest by the way, just what Fleming said would happen.
