Too little, too late, etc.

Williamson's action tho:

Might just be the worst out there, with all due respect to Messrs Ajmal & Botha.
Not even the worst in this match imo, Samuel's quicker delivery is cringeworthy.

Yeah Samuels's quicker ball is the biggest disgrace in cricket as far as bowling actions go, but at least it's just a variation delivery; Williamson's entire action looks off regardless of what he's bowling.

That was one of the worst maidens ever. They only need 11 to win Kane; toss it up on off and show everyone how much further than Vettori I know you can turn it.

Congrats to the WI. They've completely out played NZ on this whole tour.

As for NZ.... good luck Mr Hesson. You're going to need it.

Samuels was the difference. Scored a ton and a fifty in a game where there were just two other half centuries. What a year he's having.

Great win for the WI this, gutting for NZ after the position they were in this test match, still good signs for them though. I'm really liking their bowling attack

More than anything, this side needs a mental coach and a complete mental recondition. The amount of soft wickets at vital times, before stumps being the big one, cost momentum time and time again.

As did the silly practice of nightwatchmen. We used Wagner 3 times in four innings - a) highlighting how poor we were before stumps and b) that our batsmen aren't willing to go out there and front up. Fair play to Wagner, he certainly barred up and fought, but it's like throwing our innings into quicksand. He fights and fights, we don't get any momentum, he gets out and immediately the opposition has the ascendancy.

I'd always suscribe to doing what the opposition least wants you to do. I'm pretty sure that's not insert Neil Wagner before stumps.

First of all, congratulations to the West Indies. Their bowling unit especially has a lot going for it and will pull the pants down of better teams than ours.

I think the contrast between us performing respectably at Olympic sports despite less funding, less player numbers and less supporters and between this lot bring it home as to just how utterly hopeless the NZ cricket team are for a team of their ability in a sport of crickets popularity in NZ.

We can hardly claim we don't have the raw ability this time. It isn't often we've been able to boast of such middle order and bowling prowess in our youth players like we've been able to since Taylor and Ryder burst on the scene to the present. They've just never been made to work because they've risen through the domestic ranks at a leisurely stroll on the back of their own superior skill compared to their peers.

They've also learned to lose. "If we play our best cricket we will compete" etc etc gets said too often by the NZ camp.

The West Indies dominated world cricket with a population slightly larger than ours, so I don't think it too much to expect NZ to be able to play in an at least competent manner at all times.

What do NZ fans make of Mccullum's performance this series and in general? When I first saw him a long time ago I was impressed by him. One of his early innings I remember was a 96 against England and he seemed a good prospect, attacking but also mature enough to play properly.

Then a few months later I find out he's transformed himself into this whirlwind aggressor. The strange thing was his reputation seemed to increase, but I found him a far worse batsman. Instead of playing selectively he seemed to be swinging and hacking at balls (especially in the 50 over game) and I didn't find his batting showed much talent when he played like this. Good bowlers tended to sort him out quite quickly.

Since then I have by and large found him disappointing, and I find him to be overrated as a player by the commentators and general media. His hand eye coordination is good, but not on the level he thinks it is ie not on the level of a Sehwag or Gayle, maybe he should look to tone down the aggressive intent. Whatever it is he needs to find a way to press on with his batting if he wont keep and Im not sure how he will do that.

I think NZ fans are sick of wasting their breath discussing him. He does what he wants, there's stuff all we can do about it, so whatever. Now his mate is his coach, so on it goes.

So that's the end of Wright's tenure. Thoughts?

We had some occasional success but I really expected more development on the batting front. The successes we did have were built more on excellent bowling performances rather than our batsmen briefly figuring things out.

He did ok. That's about all you can say I think. Obviously tough to know how much of his own stuff he was actually able to implement.

Well done Windies. Should be challenging some other sides if they can keep their key players together.

Someone should start an NZ v India thread since first test is little over two weeks away. Would love to see us v India on seamers at home at the moment, but in India will likely do a lot of ball chasing. I see Vettori is only rated a ten percent chance of being fit so wouldn't be surprised to see both Nethula and Jeets in the squad.

Going to be hard work...

Seen as a bit of a messed-with messiah. On the other hand, the same bloke who said to the team after the second ODI 'just get Gayle out for bloody hell's sake' without any discussion of how to do it. If he had one, his PR team could all pat themselves on the back for the distance between image and reality with him.

Hah, that sounds about right. I keep thinking back with some regret to how Millmow was always Wright's biggest advocate in the press.

Cricket | Vettori injury puts him in doubt for India... | Stuff.co.nz

He's a 90 per cent chance that he won't be there, so we've got to look forward to seeing how the next spinner gets on over there,'' Taylor said from Jamaica, following the team's five-wicket loss to the West Indies.

Taylor didn't confirm that his Central Districts team-mate Tarun Nethula was that ''next spinner'', with the team to travel to India still to be named.
Not exactly a resoundingly supportive choice of language is it. Sounds like Nethula really may've been bowling reputation-damaging dross over there.

I've got a bit of career-best 7/75 Jeets in a video now that I'll probably post when a mod makes the official India thread.

Behind Nethula, and ignoring Jeets because he's been unspeakably **** for so long at Test level, who else is there?

Todd Astle to get picked?

9 spinners took more than 10 wickets in the last Plunket Shield:

Bruce Martin - 37 @ 37
Todd Astle - 31 @ 38.35
Tarun Nethula - 26 @ 30.46
Jeetan Patel - 24 @ 34.70
Bhupinder Singh - 16 @ 36
Luke Woodcock - 13 @ 31
Daniel Vettori - 12 @ 16.33
Nathan McCullum - 10 @ 46.40
Mitchell Santner - 10 @ 53.10

So yeah, there isn't anyone really crying out to be picked tbh.

I'd have preferred Jeets over Nethula for the Windies and I'd prefer him again for the India tour. He's never quite cracked it at Test level but he's still the best of an average bunch.
