I'm surprised that his econ in ODIs is a relatively high 5.20 if he's more in the McGrath mold.. is it because he hasn't figured out death bowling? He definitely gets taken apart in T20s..
Firstly, I'm talking about Test cricket, and secondly the post-2012 Southee is entirely different than the earlier one.

he bowls at the death for nz
Yes, but McGrath did too from what I recall, and even though it's a different era and I don't expect a sub-4 econ in ODIs, I expect Southee to be in the Kulasekara-realm (who also bowls in the death) when it comes to ODIs - around 4.75 econ with a lower average.

He is obviously far ahead in Tests. Just wondering why it doesn't seem to translate as well in other formats.

The OD length is different to the test length, Southee was ruined once by too much exposure to LO; swing bowlers are much less likely to be equally gun in both formats compared to the McGraths

I think Bangladesh offie Sohag Gazi opened the bowling on debut and was promptly hit for six by Chris Gayle, only to get him out a little while later.
Yes; it was in fact the very first ball of the match.

Sohag Gazi to Gayle, SIX, surprise surprise, Gayle smashes the first ball over long on for a big six, against offspinner Gazi. Welcome to Test cricket

I'm impressed with McCullum's decisions in this match. When you've batted for two days the declaration question is always coming, and the way I see it you've got two positive options - attack with the bat, rack up 600 and aim to bat once, or take the option that he has done. I'd probably have gone for the former - those extra 80 runs or so you need are always easier at the end of a big innings than at the start of a new one - but I understand the argument to rest your bowlers as well. Given the way Southee has come out it this second innings it pretty much justifies the call 100%.

Bit poor from Edwards against spin in this test. Being from the Caribbean, and having a ton each in India and Bangladesh, it's surprising he's fallen so quickly twice to Craig.

Southee's average 33 nek minnit 29

With him bowling at a low-mid 20s level of quality and Boult not far behind him (this Test aside) we'd surely have the best opening attack in the world behind SA and Aus right now.
