International Debutant
He's actually long way off, the record is Lawrence Rowe's average of 336 in his third innings.
So 82 more runs and Neesham will have the highest average in the history of Test cricket (ignoring those who never went out)?

50 more until the declaration and then 32 in the second test, easy.

As an aside, has anyone scored a hundred in both of their debut Tests before? I have a feeling that it probably has happened...

I figure at 240/2 - even worse case, losing 4 wickets for 30 runs, we'll still make 400 on the back of a Watling last ditch effort - but ultimately, you have a team that's used to scoring a lot of runs batting on a wicket not giving them any cause for concern at this stage in the match. Our best four players of spin are either at the crease or in the shed ( Williamson, Taylor, McCullum, Watling) and we have a very hungry all rounder with a well known big match temperament wanting to prove that he deserves his spot in Neesham. Jerome has been on a probing line and length but I'd still rather face him than Ishant Sharma - Roach just looks underdone and not likely to scare the batsmen on this wicket which is his predominant weapon when he's bowling well.
Mmhm.

I agreed somewhat, until I remembered that you were the guy who rated Wagner above Boult
Never rated Wagner above Boult, rated Wagner above anyone not named Southee or Boult in NZ Cricket. Was also the only person saying that Wagner not only deserved his place in the side but had a habit of taking great wickets which he continued to do in NZ against Windies and India.

Oh please shut up.

This, Keir Bettley is a better bowler than Sodhi. How much rubbish can you sprout?
Keir Bettley is a horrible leg spinner, that's the point. Sodhi does not deserve his spot in first class cricket, let alone test.

Excellent innings from Kane.

Benn almost got him out like that 2/3 times yesterday so I'm surprised (but relieved) that he didn't learn his lesson.
Great innings, just a shame he never kicks on and makes it a big daddy. He and Taylor being so soft in their dismissal really opened the door for the Windies, fortunately Watling and Neesham shut it again

Matt: "Watching from the sidelines, Corey Anderson must have very mixed feelings. He is effectively being batted out of the starting line up here, because on WI pitches both he and Neesham do not have the bowling quality to occupy a bowling slot. From purely a fan perspective, great to see some legitimate competition!" Could either of them open the batting?

Haha, even cricinfo has picked up on the idea.

Not a fan, to be honest. They'll eventually be good enough to play in the same team consistently. Neesh needs to work on his bowling and we're there.
Problem is, until Anderson fails - I don't think they'll pick Neesham over him even in the case of these last few innings. I think they're that dependent on Anderson being their next non fixing Cairns that he almost has to break that mould in order for Neesham to play. I actually rate Neesham the better test talent.

Jeff Dujon getting stuck in to the tubby kid wicketkeeper practicing on the park next door.

"He looks like he's expecting something but it might not be a ball."

International Captain
What's going on with the bowlers? Are Bravo and Taylor both unfit?

Just noticed it was Darren Bravo - his first bowl in Tests. Thought it must have been Dwayne given that he came on first change.

And finally, Taylor rejoins the attack.

Just ****ty captaincy.

Bravo is Darren, not Dwayne, so not really an allrounder. He's barely bowled in first class cricket. He had an over to let Taylor change ends, I think.

Neesham is a strong strong lad, everyone else is struggling to make the ball go to the boundary for four - he's moosing it and it's racing across the field.

I think the outfield has hardened and quickened up just a touch today. But yeah, nice shots.

Anyone know in Cricinfo how the "control %" is made up for the batsman? I think that dashboard is amazing but I'd love to know how they generate some of the metrics. Watling has the highest control I've seen them show at 90%

I think if it's it doesn't go where the batsman intended to go, it's not in control. So if you deliberately hit it in the air, it's fine, but if you top edge a cut it's uncontrolled.
