***Official New Zealand in India Nov-Dec 2021 Thread***

I know this series didn’t mean much but I’m still not comfortable with us plummeting to bad old days levels once the motivation was a bit off. Hope we can perform somewhat like New New Zealand in the tests.

We lost the last bilateral t20s 5-0 but can't remember exactly how many but couple of games would have been lost in the super over.

Definitely don't mind the current series result but disappointing we haven't competed the last two games.

NZ could have won 3-2 in early 2020 T20Is. We got spanked twice, but then blew 3 chases, 2 ties (lost super over) and a 7 run loss. IIRC all 3 were winnable at 17-18th over mark.

If we were serious about this T20 series we could've easily brought in a couple of batsmen from the test squad who are doing test prep.

Can’t really play the ‘didn’t take it seriously’ card when we were full strength apart from KW and the injured Conway, and basically stuck to the World Cup squad for replacements.

If we wanted to do better in the T20 series we could've brought in Will Young and replaced Seifert with Latham (v Indian spinners)

A top 6 of
Guptill
Young
Latham (wk)
Phillips
Mitchell/Chapman
Neesham

would've been better than

Guptill
Mitchell
Chapman
Phillips
Seifert
Neesham

which we used

Considering Mitchell won you T20 WC SF recently , no way anyone was dropping him.

Rahul Dravid summed up the reason perfectly.

Whatever it takes!!!
NZ's problem is not as much the top 6 as the fact that they have ****ing Santner batting 7. Like Axar, he is not someone I would be comfortable with batting 7 for an IPL franchise, much less the national side. You guys are gonna have the same issues we did and be wildly inconsistent. 7 proper batsmen who have both the hitting ability and range of shots is a must in T20s.

Ideally NZ should go with this kind of balance -

Guptill
Conway (wk)
Kane
Will Young (??)
Philips
Neesham
Mitchell
Santner
Southee
Boult
Ferguson/Sodhi/Milne (depending on conditions)

This gives you proper batsmen till 7 and you can figure out your 5th bowler between Neesh, Mitchell and Philips with even Kane chucking a few in the worst case. And you also got a couple of big hitters even if they don't have the range of shots at 8 and 9 which is ideal for a T20 side.

I agree. Will Young is a good player but I'd rather have Finn Allen (T20 strike rate 170/T20i strike rate 190) opening with Guptill, then Williamson and Conway at 3 and 4 and the 5-7 you suggested.

Phillips was a bit of a sitting duck against Ashwin and Axar in the first and third games. Don’t like his chances if he makes the starting lineup for the tests. Ravindra should make the top 6 for sure, even though it’ll likely mean three left handers vs Ashwin.

Thing is T20 is game of fine margins India were the better team in that T20 series & that reflected in result even though scoreline was a bit flattering. 1st two games were smooth sailing. 3rd was the one ideally NZ would have won but Southee got tonked in Super over.
4th & 5th T20 was India dominating the game for most parts.

In tests NZ should play two left arm spinners vs India. Pujara Rahane all have struggles vs them. Santner & Ajaz will be very threatening if the pitch takes turn.
Off spinner won't be much of an issue.. There will be a playing XI full of right handers.
They need to be smart in their team selections.

Ajaz, yes, but not sure if Santner can be relied on to exploit favourable conditions. Would be a lot of responsibility for Ravindra but I see him doing just as well if not better than Santner.

Santner is a bit like Axar Patel & has a decent straighter one. The loopy & slow left arm spinners these days are pretty useless in India. You need to be quicker through the air here. Deceiving Batsman in flight has never worked here.
O keefe Panesar & Swann all had these things in common.
