I said something yesterday or Thursday about the latest trend of umpires to (seemingly) rely on a single sense to the exclusion of all else - it's a bit silly when that sense is hearing, and the game is being played in a bubbling cauldron.
But if its a *very* thin nick to the keeper you arent gonna see the ball move from where the umpire is standing, so surely you either rely on sound or never give a thin nick out?

looks like a very fine nick to the keeper - cricinfo

I don't know who's having the bigger shocker this morning, T'awful or the cricinfo cheerleaders.
Point of interest - have you ever tried to do a BBB commentary?
We did it for the semi-final and final of WC2003 on Cricket Web - and believe me, after an hour of it you need to go and have a lie down. You know you have just made a mistake, there's no time to correct yourself and it's on your mind for the next ten minutes - in the meantime you've made three more, got the batsmen mixed up, missed a couple of dot balls, a total eclipse of the sun or the daily mirror and thrown up on your own shoes.

The bat was at the Pavilion End and the ball was at the Radcliffe Road end. There were three bus stops between bat and ball.

To be fair New Zealand did get a few odd calls, however iam one that goes by the "What goes around, comes around" and sitting watching the cricket on Thursday I was quite amazed how neither umpire was giving anything and England in all seriouness could have had at least 5 LBW calls that they got none off, of which two or three would have hit middle stump halfway up. And like Eddie said wickets like Thorpe went your way so I think we are entitled to one from you :p

But a good pitch and Oram and Carins still to come, they could quite easily add a fair amount of quick runs to the already heathy lead... but the pitch is still playing well and England could be quite confident of chasing 300 - 350 odd down (if they even want to try).

And then once you have done that for an hour... think of poor old (sorry) poor Eddie who covered an complete innings all on his own, with 4 spinners bowling the bulk of the overs! - Quite how he did it I will never know, but the 3 month break he took soon after might have explained it alittle :D

Eddie - fair enough comment about doing BBB's, but the fact it was even written suggests a pair of rather hopeful eyes were to blame. Not unlike the optimistic little half-volley chap with the English gloves on it seems!

After watching the tape tonight with his life coach, I bet Taufel's confidence will be too far gone to give NZ a damn thing tomorrow. ;)

Well, more bad calls, but it's getting to the stage that every time an LBW shout goes up I flip a coin and try to call it before the umpire does. I imagine the same thing will happen with the English innings to come. The trick in this match is obviously to just yell for anything that isn't going for four. Well, shouldn't be going for four, anyway. If it goes for four byes, it's probably because you're giving a shout and forgot to chase it.

And the problem here is what? :p :D - To be fair to Taufel, yes he has a poor game by his and our standards... however the guy has been nearly faultless in the past. I can't honestly remember a game where he has been bad before (and I’ve seen a fair few series involving him now) and he always seems to impress the commentary team with his decisions.

Everyone has a bad day, but iam sure he will get through it and aid England to victory

Thanks, Rich. Now I've got to go and have a lie down again just reading about it. Pressure. Some of our helpful 'fans' came back the next day with "That third ball of the 27th over. Are you sure that it was Sehwag fielding it? I think you'll find that it was Tendulkar".

That bloke the other day was right - I have no life.

That was easily the worse decision ive ever seen in cricket :)
I can beat that... Grimoldby U15 v Caistor U15 last year

Bowler comes in, bowls, batsman gets down and sweeps to square leg, umpire calls wide.

Don't see much of Brad Cheaty-Hodge, then?
I saw that on central news :) But that wasnt a bad decision, i mean the umpire would never think Hodge would have lied about touching the rope, i guess he forgot he was australian :)

He didn't lie about touching the rope.

He leaped over it and ran backwards for 7 steps.

32 more and it would have qualified as a literary masterwork :D

I mean fair enough trying it on if theres no cameras at the ground but for him to do it when he must have known it would be caught on film...... oh dear :) Did he ever explain why he lied? would be interesting to see what he had to say. Its a shame the ECB didnt punish the player / team, make an example of them.

To be perfectly fair, he didn't tell any porkies at all.

He took the catch well inside the boundary and then decided to have a bit of a laugh with the Derbyshire supporters sitting right behind the ropes in that part of the ground.

Corky called him a cheat, tried to get the match result overturned, cried to Tiny Tim Lamb and thus a Cricket Web legend was born and I got about 3 weeks worth of DD stories and half of DD's Christmas Carol out of it.

To be equally fair, some of Cheaty's mates know where I live and they've never caused me any troublmmmmphhh oof!

I got that in a training match when I guess I was 13.

It was wide, outside leg, spun and bowled him. But because it was wide when it passed the batter, it was called wide.

It was a messabout on the village green, and only a few people there knew anything about cricket.
