how many people were suprised at losing 4 wickets for little runs ?

i mean as a nz supporter as soon as flemming got out i thought to myself "here comes the typical colapse with the tail enders to pick up the crums"

still... i have a feeling we will win this match :)

Was yesterday's easy, then - diving forward?
ive seen both butcher and thorpe take quite a few blinders and drop many dollies before.....they do seem to have a greater chance of pulling of the blinders than they do with the dollies.

Good result for NZ at the end of day 2. Great partnership between Flemballs & Papps, then the customary middle-order batting collapse, but this time we soldiered on. Oram played solidy, but Styris is quite clearly out of form. A swap between Styris and McMillan maybe in order for the third test. The partnership between Cairns & McCullum saved the day, hopefully they can get the score pass 400.

It may be important to try and force the follow on, possibly NZ could try and bat the first session and score 100 runs (450 total). Ultimately day 3 rests with Martin & Tuffey - the time to take wickets has come. Their is enough time to force a result, only 9 overs (I think) will be lost if the weather stays clear - even though the scoring rate for today wasn't that flash.

a good grafting day at the office for the NZL batting innings - managing to do what they were unable to at Lords - establish partnerships & keep the scoreboard ticking over with singles to rotate the strike..............consequently only 2 single figure failures so far, with both the out of form Papps & Styris managing to score...........

Papps in particular should take great confidence firstly from his survival from any number of chances that would have seen him out 3 times under 50, and secondly for then posting his best Test score & establishing a record partnership with Flem for any NZL wicket at Headingly.............hopefully this will be the boost he needs to regain his domestic form from this year..........

with Cairns & McCullum established NZL will look to score quickly if the weather is clear, but more importantly to establish a big enough total that they may be able to enforce the follow on..........ideally McCullum would feed Cairns the strike, and then Vettori likewise to whomever he partnered..........

if this is achieved we may see ENG in to bat around lunch & then it will be the turn of the NZL bowling attack including Cairns & Vettori to do their work..........if it remains overcast perhaps Styris' lack of pace may find the conditions more condusive to swing, as opposed to the quicker ENG bowlers??????

I'd rather see Sinclair on 'current' form...............esp if he bats down the order - more inclined to establish a partnersip IMO..........

IMO NZL were never going to try to 'advance the game' with such a dodgy batting lineup, unless they were able to consolidate the innings with the top order...........now that the platform is laid it will be interesting to see if they persue quick runs tomorrow...........

as an aside I believe the 'success' of the top order was due to 2 things from a batting perspective.........

*Fleming at #3;
*and batting with a less defensive style of batsman than Richardson.........

The fomer point meant that Fleming came in when Richardson's wicket fell, and that he did not have to try and force the pace.........

the latter point afforded both batsmen the 'luxury' of taking the singles, knowing that their partner would look to respond in kind & they would neither be 'starved' of the strike nor have to try to play scoring strokes when they were on strike again..........

As easily as I can join in on saying Styris is struggling for form, I can also easily say that the six he pulled off was by far my shot of the match to date. That was a beauty, a huge shot for a huge boundar, and down the wicket too! Awesome stuff. Pity he lost out short after. I would have loved to see him continue doing that.

Ah well, all in all I'm a happy New Zealander at the end of day two.

How can you possibly enjoy watching Papps? He played and missed at least fifteen times!

My call is dead-set draw from hereon in. Weather's likely to be belting!

I really dont think Papps has the technique to open in test cricket, he plants his front foot far too early and if england hadn't fielded like school boys would long since have gone.

It really REALLY bothers me how Butcher still makes it into the slips, he's ok fielding at Gully it seems but the moment he goes into the slip region he loses it, i think he just suffers big lapses in concentration (something thats hindered his batting alot over the years). Surely we have someone better to go in there?
