i think having 4 specialist bowlers is ok, if we have ryder and styris there to chuck some pies. Dont underestimate Scottys presence in this side, something we missed in the test series. Yes he is out of form but give him some time. I am still conufused about the make-up of our quicks as none of them are really established:

Mills - plenty of experience but has failed to make an impact recently
Martin - leeks too many at times and his batting in an ODI is too much of a liability
Southee - plenty of that potential word but who knows
Mason - TOOL!
Gillespie - too expensive but should stay in considerations if conditions suit

of these five we have to play 3 which is a real toss-up. I cant wait for jimmy franklin to come back.

Mason>Gillespie, Southee and Martin by a considerable distance imo.

Dunno why we're hitting the panic button in selection when we were likely to win that game. :p

Scott Styris should stay in, that should be a given.

Elliott looks handy, not going to be world class however with McCullum up the order if we can play Oram at six and Elliott at seven we can go in with two allrounders. Six genuine limited overs bowlers would be fun to have as well if Elliott plays the Chris Harris get out of jail card during the middle overs role.

Problem is it lessens the batting. I don't think Elliott would be required if we had Franklin whom I feel is a number seven in the making and hopefully he can sort the ODI bowling out without comprimising his test match bowling.

EDIT: I'll post my team for the next game :p

How

Taylor

It's interesting how Franklin has suddenly become a shoe-in/godsend for a lot of folk after being a figure of hate.
On talkback radio, yes he was. In the WC, especially those last few games he got his act together with his bowling, outbowling even Bond. Athers came up with some stats a while ago which showed quite the improvement plus if he develops his batting, which he is quite capable of doing as he showed in a test century, he'll make a nice combination with Oram. His test bowling has never been questioned by most I would think.

Besides, who would you have, Gillespie or Franklin?:p

*wind up* Franklin would walk into the England side ahead of Anderson or Macarenhas though. :p

Weather in the SW has been poor today, can't remember how good the drainage is at Nevill Road. Forecast for tomorrow is decent, whether it's right we'll have to wait and see. Seems a better prospect of a decent\full ODI's play than there was on Wednesday, so fingers crossed.

Dunno, I'm sure it gave him a headache. Haha get it?

I'll jump in a lake now. Failed Jimmy Franklin Migraine Joke #327
What on Earth's going on in the avatar department?

The departure from the famed Flem photo was bad enough; now we've got ANOTHER psycho smiley to add to the Young list.

Wonder when he was a figure of hate on this forum then.
It's a strange phenom, do people find that when a player gets injured after a good 'season', everybody talks him up like he's the chosen one, just unlucky with injuries.

Let's list some that we have alluded to in this thread alone:

Simon Jones
James Franklin
Shane Bond
Jacob Oram
Freddie Flintoff
Jesse Ryder

We chastise the ones currently in the side, almost 'waiting' for the injured to come back. Hyping them up like the international side cannot be better off without having them in the side.

Bond's hype could hypothetically be in this category, who knows.

In some cases. the player is almost always better off injured or MIA, so his reputation will increase over time. Ryder for example.

Actually I have changed my mind about Franklin after seeing his stats and go for Jeetan Patel. So the bowling would be Bond, Mills, Oram, Patel and Vettori.

ODIs
Bond - 19.32
Mills - 26.92
Vettori - 32.03
Mason - 33.44
Patel - 33.52
Franklin - 37.37
Gillespie - 44.20
Martin - 44.66
O'Brien - 59.00

Argh, looks like Oram is still injured.

Hopefully, we can finally level the series and then have him back for the 4th ODI. Would drop Styris for Oram in that case. Yeah, Styris has experience but he hasn't bowled anything other than pies for the last couple of years. He was our in form batsman a year or so back, but I'd rather have Elliot, who seems to be a better fit for the current side.
