**Official** New Zealand in England

What was the official reason behind him being dropped anyway? I remember at Napier he made about 70-odd in pretty quick time. Keeping was adequate as you mention.
The reason given was they wanted the same wicketkeeper in both forms, which makes little sense; hopefully the actual reason was that Mustard was obviously a woeful batsman, which makes far more sense. Mustard's form this season has also been poor, suggesting his good 2007 was a flash-in-the-pan, which would make perfect sense given how poor he obviously was at ODI level.

Anyway, starting to hope James Foster might get the next ODI gig, much as that's doubtful.

You think this is a trend with umpires whose surnames start with "Ll", do you?
Ay, possibly.
I must admit I don't really understand the procedure by which county umpires get promoted to international duties (generally starting with ODIs, of course). Naturally they would have to express an interest, not everyone would want to do it - but it is done on recommendations by county captains do you think?
God knows. Whatever, it's just a shame Benson, who is decidedly average, is regularly standing in internationals while Lloyds, who did very well and presumably continues to do on the domestic circuit, is not. Can't blame Lloyds at all, but it's a real shame.

If memory serves Miller said something like he wanted to have the same keeper in all formats. Wrong-headed thinking for me because some batsmen are clearly more adept in one format or the other, so logic dictates keepers (who're mainly judged on their batting in the abbreviated form, unless their keeping descends to Prioresque levels of inadequacy) can be equally so. Ambrose (just about) gets a pass-mark in tests, but has been rank in the shortened form.

Imagine Prior will probably get another go in ODIs next, what with him being a Sussex man & all. 8-)

Anyway, fair play to NZ. Showed a lot of ticker with limited playing resources & thoroughly worthy winners. We were gash, obviously, but you can only beat what's stuck in front of you.
Yeah, why not go the whole hog. Why not have the same spinner in both formats, so Monty plays all games, the same batting line-up, so Vaughan, Strauss, Cook become automatic selections. 8-)

I realise the pace attack is currently the same, so nothing to add there!

BTW, I'd just like to mention at this moment... at anyone who thought England were a better ODI team than New Zealand. Out of the 10 ODIs played in the last few months, NZ have won 6 (which should've been 8) and lost 2. The only 2 defeats were comprehensive ones.

It's utterly stupid how many people overestimate England's ODI calibre, and how regularly they do it (generally before EVERY series, and after the opening match too if that's won).

England are still the worst of the pack in ODIs.

Quite happy atm. Was really worried last game of the tour syndrome would rear its ugly head for us. We've made some positive strides foward on this tour imo. Englands ODI team isn't all bad news. they've found themselves a very good spinner in Swann and maybe, just maybe, Shah will finally get his act together. Have also been impressed with Anderson and Broad finding some consistency and bowling very well.

Vettori on Southee:

"I'm trying to get him to play for us in the IPL (as opposed to Counties Cricket), which is more important."

Great win, satisfactory really. Would really like us to improve our test abilities. Which nation are we playing next in that regard? Australia? Talk about baptism of fire!

Comfortably the bowlers' series for kiwis.

Mills stepped up in the crucial games, and Southee led the way with regular wickets and cleaning the lower tail when needed. Gillespie played a great supporting role.

Geraint, Read, Mustard, Nixon, Prior, Ambrose

Am I missing anyone else that has been tried over the last say 4 years?

Was at Lord's today for the game and it was a pretty gutless batting performance. I think we really missed Collingwood with the bat, ball and captaincy, South Africa are going to slaughter us in the ODI series.

Didn't you beat us at home in 2007?

In chronological order, it's been:
Read
Jones
Read
Nixon
Prior
Mustard
Ambrose

Which is absurd, really. Read should just have been in constantly. None of the rest are as good as him with gloves or (in the one-day game) bat.

Are ICL players banned internationally? I thought it was at each board's discretion. Would be worth going back to Read if possible - ironically it was his poor CT performances that got him dropped for the Ashes, though.
