**Official** New Zealand in England

Being completely weary of jinxing, when is the last time NZ had an opening pair go past 50 partnership in both innings in one test?

Yeah, but they came back and won the next 2, something we won't be able to do if we lose this.

Nah, good as O'Brien (surprisingly) was these last couple of sessions, Steyn in recent times was far better than that. IF (and it certainly is an if) he can continue that form this summer he should tear through us regularly, and of course Kallis would've been more than capable of that Taylor innings. And South Africa won't need a spinner of Vettori's calibre as I doubt we'll see a pitch like this again this summer.
Kallis is capable of it doesn't mean he would have produced it certainly not at the scoring rate Taylor managed. I'm a big fan of Steyn but bowling into the wind producing that line & lengh as O'Brian did probably wouldn't be his forte.

I just don't get the suggestion that because New Zealnd can hammer England (in a game that they have performed excellently) that South Africa will automatically do it. As shown by their 1st test against the Windies it only takes a couple of performances good or bad to swing a test against the form book.

O Brien got picked precisely because he's a bit of a specialist bowling into the wind. I doubt he's as effective in any other conditions.

No, he'd just tear in downwind and induce edge to the slips and smash the stumps time and again...

Seriously, Steyn of recent times is better than O'Brien or most others will ever be able to be. Including everyone playing for New Zealand in this game. And Taylor produced this innings because the mood took him - he might never again play a knock this good, it was sensational. Kallis has played innings of the type before now, though, and could easily do so again.

Oh, it's a dangerous assumption, certainly, and one I most definately won't be making. But the form-book being wripped-up a la this Test is always disappointing.

BTW, How is looking in obscenely good touch here. How I do hate a cricket-ball that doesn't swing.

Would love nothing more than for How to come out and dominate after lunch and perhaps even get his highest test score. He's strung two good consecutive 50's together now and seems to be making the position at the top his own. Redmond to play the foil.

As I type he gets away with an LBW appeal. Lucky he's got Hair adjudicating who seems to hate to give LBWs today. Balances the ledger somewhat.

This might cheer up some of the English fans who are still with us.

That being said, NZ will be well aware of the forecast, so I reckon they'll go like the clappers today and declare overnight with a view to winning the game before Day 5.
And with the usual non-swinging crap that England are bowling and the relative ease with which How and Redmond have so far hit, that looks very likely to come to pass.
