Yeah, this is the sort of situation where McCullum would have tried his darnedest to push for the win. Williamson obviously more pragmatic. I suppose if NZ add another 100-120 from now to the end of the first hour tomorrow they could make it an uncomfortable declaration for England but looks tough going at the moment.
I’m sure they’d prefer to be scoring faster but this bowling really isn’t hittable.

Great review that.

Ollie’s research on the opposition clearly paying off there, though was very surprised at the successful review.

Bad match for KW, record in England taking a pounding.

When NZ went in they couldn’t lose realistically. They should have just been looking for a quick 270+ lead . I don’t think pragmatic is really right word rather defensive minded and his field settings and batting showed it too.

in fact it could be said he and his coach don’t understand test cricket, the concept of time and risk reward considering New Zealand’s tactics today. NZ being ultra aggressive with ball and bat from when Englandwere 9 down onwards would have attached basically zero risk of a loss considering the time Left in game and lead. Very
Strange from NZ.
Realistically worst case was go for it with the bat get Out for 160 and even that would’ve given NZ a decent chance of a win considering 1st inns lead and that would’ve been worst case imo

Whatever it takes!!!

You dont have to hit to score runs in tests though. There can be some better proactiveness from them. But its obvious they are treating this as ony a warm up here.

And Ollie deserves it.. I think KW was extremely lucky to get away with the first one. Pretty sure he did not hit it.

They definitely weren’t in the clear. England knock teams over for double figures routinely at home.

Agreed on the field settings. Batting - England’s attack has been relentless, thought Latham/Conway did a great job seeing off the new ball, could be much worse. SMH over the nightwatchman though.

Not on this pitch and after the first innings bowling performance. I wouldn’t have been worried about that if I was NZ .England must have a big fear factor for oppositions like NZ based on today as Nz have dug themselves into a hole here

True.

I’m just a bit scarred from years of watching visiting sides’ batting crumble in England. Even in the first innings here they knocked down the whole middle order for 6 runs. You kinda can’t count on any runs at all until they’re on the board.

(Peak) Ross would be a good guy to have in a situation like this - play some shots and reverse the momentum. Hope he’s able to do that, sending in Wagner has just stalled the innings completely.
