Bit of a chicken and egg thing with Santner, KW taking him off after 4 overs doesn’t exactly help him settle into any sort of rhythm. But then Santner himself didn’t offer much in the way of control, was being milked comfortably.
That's probably what confuses me the most. Kane is never eager to bowl him for any length of time, at key moments as a general rule etc...but he still gets picked.

Well, it could end up being a decent test Match in the end, but I fear it'll get slower and flatter making it a stodge.

If it does it may mean we avoid defeat. As good a day as we have had today we are only one bad session away from being miles behind and odds on for defeat.

ATM I just want entertainment mate, even if we lose, not very patriotic of me, but I don't want to watch Sibley bat a 350 ball 60 odd on the final two days. We'll see though, I may regret these words if there isn't a final day at all.

The pitch did appear to be a bit more two paced (with up and down bounce) today but historically it tends to get slower too.

The crowd is terrible at Lords too. You'd get a better atmosphere with the fake crowd noise added.

Yeah, people getting excited about the uneven bounce, and a bit of spin, but if it goes to how the pitch goes under sunny skies, that spin and uneven bounce will be so slow, that if your defending it shouldn't be a problem, agony for stroke-players too, but hope I'm wrong.

Can't say anything more than what's been said about Devon. The only possible way he could have got out was run out.

Watched Southee and Jamieson knock over couple. Swung huge with the new ball.

I see from Cricinfo Santner bowled all right and turned the ball big? But then 3 overs spell. Love Kane but don't like the way he uses spin bowlers. 3 overs spell for a spin bowler isn't enough to warm up.

He turned one past Root's bat, he actually bowled OK - albeit I don't know how you're going to get anything out of a guy who doesn't play that much FC cricket, bowl him 3 overs in which he's landing it OK, then yank him off.

And the pitch just isn't going to suit him, slow turn, no particular bounce. It's the sort of pitch that Vettori would've bowled well on, with subtle changes of pace, a well-disguised arm ball etc (hence why he's on the honours board at Lord's) but it won't suit Santner. Really, unless it's ragging and bouncing and he can use his height, there's really no tools he has at Test level.

Pitch is bound to get roughed up the last couple of days but that'll only help bowling to left handers. The pitch is definitely slow but hoping for variable bounce over the next couple of days.

Root is an amazing player of spin but the rest struggle against left arm spin. Hope Kane gives Santa 6-7 over spells at the least. Even the great Shane Warne's strike rate is nearly 60

Interesting some england fans trying to out Nz in the pessimism department. Root could get 250 from here, class player he is.

Well that wasn’t so good. Wagner’s tonks were fun and it was great to see Conway bring up 200, but otherwise completely England’s day. NZ desperately need to break this stand in the first half hour tomorrow or they’ll be facing a looooong day in the field.
