the batting was average, the bowling was terrible

and two new balls has lead to awesome low scorers as well. you can attack from both ends with real bowlers and ****ty part timers get mauled.

Need to write it off as a bad series for McCullum and hope he does better for the series against SA and Aus.
Over the past 2 years his ODI average has been 28.5
Great S/R, gets the side off to a fast start - run rate of 7 after one over in this game - but other players in the top 4 have to bat a lot longer (at a fast clip) than he's prepared to do in order for NZ to actually win.

you do realise we win a lot right?

like if you're so miserable in this era how did you not throw yourself off the harbour bridge during the dark years?

It's almost as if that's the plan given we've got four batsmen capable of facing over 100 balls in the top 6. No point in McCullum dicking around when it's really not his strong point.

Hes not really an opener. He had to move there cos he didnt want Jessie back in the team. Worked great for the world cup.

Ill cut him some slack.

yeah exactly.

the plan is baz goes nuts to get us off the to best start possible while guptill aims to bat the full 50. kane, ross and elliott then use that platform to knock it around or even drop anchor if need be during the middle until over 35 and go nuts at the end if they're still in. anderson and ronchi go nuts.

it's the plan because the plan is modern odi batting and modern odi batting means the plan earns 300-400 if followed perfectly and the wickets of the non icing top six batsmen are preserved until over 35.

i can't believe this isn't obvious

This.

No point in having 4 batsmen accumulating and batting the innings.

As soon as you get a slow pitch, 'new' ODI cricket reverts back to old ODI cricket. The angst can subside.
indian odis are on slow decks quite often and the scores there are higher than anywhere.

fast decks have proven to be the most bowler friendly in the modern era. pace, bounce and swing. look at some recent eden park odis like the world cup group match...

Excellent bowling England, just 15 off the last 5 overs, just when NZ were getting away.

Yeah cool. I put up a stat qualifying Baz's recent average after Flem9/46 put up his stat showing Baz's ODI performance since being made captain.

Bit of an oddity to see the brakes go on like that without taking a wicket now. Top start from Stokes.

Need wickets soon still, like

The plan's obvious. No question about that. It's the execution that's the issue. Baz's first hurdle is getting through the first over. Next, once NZ is off to a flyer he has the option of moving into 4th gear and preserving his wicket deeper into the innings. This is an option he doesn't seem to pursue. Would have been handy in the Eden Park semi-final where wickets in hand became an issue and Elliot admitted NZ lost control of the run chase, ultimately pulling through only thanks to his almost superhuman effort.

Why does he need to preserve his wicket until later though? We really haven't looked in danger of being all out against any team not called Australia.

England bowling pretty well here, sticking to their lines and lengths. When they have overpitched we've tended to pick the fielders a lot more than we have in the previous games too - possibly a sign that the pitch is a bit slower.
