Great S/R, gets the side off to a fast start - run rate of 7 after one over in this game - but other players in the top 4 have to bat a lot longer (at a fast clip) than he's prepared to do in order for NZ to actually win.

Hes not really an opener. He had to move there cos he didnt want Jessie back in the team. Worked great for the world cup.

it's the plan because the plan is modern odi batting and modern odi batting means the plan earns 300-400 if followed perfectly and the wickets of the non icing top six batsmen are preserved until over 35.

indian odis are on slow decks quite often and the scores there are higher than anywhere.

fast decks have proven to be the most bowler friendly in the modern era. pace, bounce and swing. look at some recent eden park odis like the world cup group match...

The plan's obvious. No question about that. It's the execution that's the issue. Baz's first hurdle is getting through the first over. Next, once NZ is off to a flyer he has the option of moving into 4th gear and preserving his wicket deeper into the innings. This is an option he doesn't seem to pursue. Would have been handy in the Eden Park semi-final where wickets in hand became an issue and Elliot admitted NZ lost control of the run chase, ultimately pulling through only thanks to his almost superhuman effort.

England bowling pretty well here, sticking to their lines and lengths. When they have overpitched we've tended to pick the fielders a lot more than we have in the previous games too - possibly a sign that the pitch is a bit slower.
