Well if you play enough matches.

9 centuries from 111 matches...

End of career average finally hit 40. That does not reflect his batting talent. Flemming is probably New Zealand's best captain. But he is not talked about as one of our best batsmen. Do you think he could have been given his talent?

Are you serious about the last sentence? I mean I am not to pigeon hole Williamson, but there are endless examples of all time great players that captaincy did not agree with their personal form.

Plus, does he have the personality type to lead a team? I would imagine that he has a great cricketing mind and is a thinking cricketer. That is not in dispute.
Crowe has a chapter on Fleming in his book 'Raw'. In his view when he became captain at 23 he missed two or three years of his batting apprenticeship. Crowe felt that Fleming had similar capability to Vaughan, Chanderpaul & Langer, so overall underachieved with the bat.

I recall Fleming seemed to improve after a season with Middlesex in 2001 where he was able to work on his batting. Williamson has been playing county cricket since he was 20 so probably is well ahead of where Fleming was in terms of developing his game at a similar age.

I've got no doubt that Williamson would be an excellent captain, but do like the idea of him being able to continue to focus on his batting. Latham actually stands out as someone else who has been viewed as a future captain having already done the job for Canterbury and New Zealand A. Although he ideally needs another 3-4 years at least to develop at test level. Maybe they could try a split captaincy with Watling for tests & Williamson taking the shorter forms?

Latham has actually already captained the black caps in Sri Lanka if I remember correctly.
Wasn't that Kyle Mills?

Anyway, making a young test opener captain or giving even more of a load to our wicketkeeper/arguably third-best batsman doesn't sound like a good idea.

I thought the same thing about Watling at first thought. That is quite a load. And then I realised, the likes of AB and Dhoni did it. And that Watling is not too tired from playing the shorter format cricket.

And while he may well arguably be a third best batsmen, he is lower middle order, and is saving the innings or icing it. The tone for the innings has already been set by those above.

I think more likely issue is that NZC may be averse to split captaincy. That said, Watling may be in the ODI team at that point as Ronchi is no spring chicken. Has Ronchi stated he wants to be in the side till the next World Cup. Will his hand eye suffice at 38 years of age?

If Kane wanted the captaincy when Brendon retires, he should be given it. But if it affects his batting or he doesn't like all the media responsibilities that come with it as well as player management, it should be reallocated at first opportunity.

We are all talking years in the future, but I think NZC fans unanimously agree that NZC has found a special player in Kane. Special players do not necessarily need to be the captain of an international team.

On the flip side, if Latham does get considered for captaincy, that is great news. It will mean that a test opener has locked down a position.

KW trying to get more out of Munro and Glenn Phillips and so on....hmm. It does risk becoming a bit like the Vettori years tbh. A bit like Cribbage trying to get better posts out of viriya.

"Hey Kane, how can I improve my batting average?"

"Well if you hit the ball along the ground through cover, point and mid wicket, you wouldn't be caught so often, failing that, stop playing test cricket".

Missing Mills, and missing Mitch being effective.

A back injury to a gun test bowler during a JAMODI series really makes you appreciate the ODI specialist cannon fodder. Need to find some kiwi ancestry in Clint McKay's family tree.

NZ is two points behind India in the ODI championship ratings.

If NZ wins the next two games, it will it be in second place.

A little questionable that we are ranked higher than South Africa to be honest.

Maybe we should be cotton-wooling Southee...he was complaining of fatigue after the tests.

Dunno about that. The last time the two teams played with everything on the line the BCs came out on top. I wouldn't think to say we're a clear second atm but a CWC semi-final is when you put it all on the line and we had more than the Proteas that day.

According to a Herald article a couple of days ago, McCullum's retirement is "imminent."

The Herald has been a bit doom and gloom lately, having also said the best case scenario for Boult is to be out injured for 18 months, the worst case never playing again.

When will we get news about Boult's injury? I noticed we haven't heard anything about Corey J. since he returned home.

Just a random selection of the words "choke" and "south africa" google results search.

There are also video documentaries in addition to that book!

Let the x-rays be taken first! It is Wednesday, when he catch a plane, Monday afternoon England time?

Whoa. He might want to see his family first having been India for a few months and then England for 3 weeks.

Just read that Boult is now ranked second in the world in ODI bowling, equal to Imran Tahir, behind only Mitchell Starc, and ahead of Dale Steyn.

And I had him as our sixth choice ODI option before the World Cup, haha.

He is currently fifth equal with Johnson on the official list. Missing matches may force him down the list now when it is next published from points accumulated at third.

I wonder if The Herald knows for sure he will be retiring - from one-dayers. Baz mates with some of the journo's?
How long has Baz got left full stop ....will the T20 World Cup be his swan song.
Hard to imagine NZ Cricket without hm.

Our injury concerns are starting to mount up...a few months out from the November tests and we have 2 all rounders and our best bowler under serious injury clouds.
