Latham just has to get some bat on those ones down leg side to get off strike - it makes Ali have to bowl further outside off where Latham looks more like scoring.

International Captain
The struggles against Ali taking the gloss off a terrific innings, possibly Latham's best to date in tests.

This is strange, he was NZ's best player of spin in Pakistan, 2 hundreds in the series.
He must be worried about his Lord's dismissal because he's just planting his foot down the crease to literally every ball and waving the bat at it. Not a successful method imo.

Ronchi looked streaky early on but good now.

Wood has to take that but went off pad did the 2nd one for me. Awful though, Latham looks all at sea and we need wickets.

Oh geez Ballance has barely bent his knees at all there. Less a case of coming up early than never going down in the first place...

Slower wickets allow him to hit the ball square easier; these quicker pitches with less spin are reducing the angles he can work with.

It's similar with Rogers to Swann. Latham and Rogers both hit the ball between mid wicket and the bowler with little punches, and a very tight front elbow. They prefer using the pace provided by the opening bowlers.

When there's no pace on the ball he can't hit the ball back there with any power unless it's all bottom hand and he loses his shape.

****s sake. Our catching has been a shambles for a bit now. ****ing awful technique from Cook, head nowhere.
