To be frank, apart from an important couple of overs with the bat against England in the WC final, he hasn't really played a substantial innings against top sides. Bashing Thisara Perera does not count.

His willingness to hit selflessly when the situation demands it is good, but sometimes like today we need a bigger innings and he doesn't provide that.

Bowling can be deceptively good but overall his batting hasn't delivered enough.

Edit: forgot important 97* in the World Cup v Pakistan. So that's one.
In his defence there hasn't been too many games since the 2019 WC, was pretty much the reason we got over the line against England in the T20 WC SF last year and had a couple of nice finishes against Windies in T20 and ODI. Reckon he's worth it to come off every now and again.

there was that century against Pakistan in the same world cup from a dire situation although I’m not sure if 2019 Pakistan counts as a top side:ph34r:

Yeah this is my thinking too, but also agree with @straw man that there's a proper recognized batsman in him (scored centuries in his first two tests if anyone remembers). Should play like one when the situation demands.

Sears and Allen for the next game please. Maybe Sodhi as well to see how he bowls. Would like to finish this series learning something other than new innovative ways to bottle up games.

We’ve already become the first team in history to lose the way we did in the England tests (I think twice in a row was all-time, let alone thrice)….surely we’re also the first team ever to lose back to back ODIs having the opposition 5/50?
Honestly that to me is less remarkable than the fact that they're going at 2 an over.

My bad, no Sodhi in the squad. Phillips to get a crack then.
