**Official** New Zealand in Australia 2015

Toothless bowling....Nz really have been ordinary since the world cup. Just no fuel left in the tank.
Thought they went okay in England...as I said just then, you've got to go over to Australia with a desire to take the game to them and win, not kind of go in half-****ed and hope a few go your way early then ride the wave. Because now we're facing the prospect of one weak day setting the tone for the next 14.

We drew a Test series in England? It wasn't that bad.
Mind you we did come into that test series as slight favorites to win it....I certainly remember all that hype. Ended up being a rescue mission in the second test to draw it....

Next test is the ideal time to get Finchy into the test XI.

Day 1 and already some of the Kiwis here have dropped their bundles. Hey, you know who goes for 4+ at the 'Gabba on day 1? Everyone. Relax, the series starts tomorrow.

The Kiwi lines were to blame for their bowling today but geez there's just no margin. Guys like Warner and Khawaja can play on the up to stuff they'd usually leave because of the even bounce and nurdling gets you 2 or 3 where on other grounds it'd get you a single so it's really tough to lay on the pressure. The bowlers weren't great, no question, but really the Aussies need 500 to put enough pressure on the Kiwi bats. Less than 300 in the day is unforgivable.

Loved Khawaja's batting today. Like a mix of (skinny) Mark Taylor and and Saeed Anwar. The 6 over cover was something else.

The series starting at 390-2 would be in keeping with Australia's advantage of playing meaningful FC red and pink-ball cricket while we play a bunch of 2nd XIers on cow dung...but I'm pretty sure that's not where the series starts at all. Once the other side is locked and loaded for 500/600 in the first innings, you're facing immense scoreboard pressure against a pretty strong attack. I'd say it's definitely started. I'm not saying we bowled awfully at all or the series is over, or we're 1-0 down. It's just a long road to hoe to get to Perth on an even keel, and I don't think that's getting too knee-jerky.

I felt like Brisbane was the one we could really win, a bit of bounce but hopefully shape on the first day. We didn't look assertive enough.

yeah while first 3 days at the Gabba are generally nice batting conditions, 2/390 is hardly normal. Actually pretty sure it broke records.

The corresponding test in 2011 NZ were bowled out for 295 on Day 1.

Nice positivity though.

1 day in and the ridiculous excuses already starting. Come on man. Even the NZers themselves were going on about how much better their preparation was. They'd be better prepared than 90% of international touring sides.

Damn this kind of day gives me PTSD.. reminds me of the 2000s. Hayden + Langer + Ponting, then Gilchrist comes into downhill ski.

Congratulations Usman Khwaja on being the second Pakistani to score a hundred at Gabba in the first test match of a series in Australia

After watching that all day today I'm going to need to lie down and stare at the wall for a while. Think some of our bowlers might be feeling the same way.

Their build up was on significantly different surfaces and the first class game was abandoned due to the farcical conditions where the fast bowlers didn't bowl. It's the nature of international cricket these days unfortunately to have inadequate preparation for the 1st test of a series.

In saying that, it may not have made a significant difference.I think it was Katich on radio questioning the tactics, whether they should have tried to slow down the scoring more with defensive fields.

Craig obviously a very different proposition to Swan but his footwork to the spinner was tidy. Quick to get back to cut anything dropped short and happy to come down the track and attack. Hopefully now feels he belongs at this level and will kick on.

SA 255/2 (D)
NZ 176/5 (L)
ENG 260 & 25/0 (D)
Aus 322/5 (W) (WI)
Aus 214 & 7/0 (W) (NZ)
Aus 242/3 (73 overs) (W) (SL)
Aus 346/3 (90) (W) (Eng)
Australia 340/7 (W) (WI)
NZ 250/7 (L)
Aus 262/2 (62 overs) (D) (Ind)
Aus 364/2 (W) (Eng)
Aus 294/6 (D) (NZ)
WI 82 & 107/1 (L)

389/2 is a better batting effort than any of those, despite some gun batting lineups. Pessimism is warranted.

.
But it's the manner of the runs though. Firstly 389 is a tad higher than the average Day 1 score at the Gabba. Secondly, the degree of domination was soul crushing if you are Kiwi fan.
This is the kind of batting that is more familiar with Australia back when Steve Waugh/Ponting were captain at Australia's peak and Steve Smith was still bowling leg spin at school cricket
