there's been some four balls but he's beaten the batsman a lot in this innings. another day those get nicks and lbws
Everyone's beaten the batsmen a lot in this Test. When you're defending a small total and the bats are visibly nervous, your first requirement is not to give away freebies.

that doesn't mean he's not unlucky to get a wicket this innings, and his first spell this afternoon was tight.

This thread will bounce out of the solar system if Bmac opens up with Craig after dinner. Oh the carnage......

Tbh, Santner bowling in the night session on day 1 pissed me off more than Craig this afternoon when all the quicks were blowing out their arses.

the iPhone's got me before on the ffs/Fifa autocorrect, I know your pain
I made a Facebook comment all about the 'state asparagus' instead of the 'state apparatus' the other day thanks to Android. Been copping it from the people in that group about the evils of government vegetables ever since then.

Aside from that decision, NZ have had a lot more in their favour this game - batting first, conditions suitable to the attack, Starc's injury. To be where they are now after all that means a win would seem undeserved.

Baz's captaincy is a lot like his batting. Gotta love the natural ability and the bravado, but sense of judgement lets him down ever so often.
Yes McCullum's always struggled to find the right balance between attack and defense with the bat. Would get carried away, flay at the wrong ball, maybe get lucky and then edge one behind while trying to play a conscientious forward defense. Then he struck the right balance around 24 months ago with much better defense and a real focus on choosing the right balls to attack.

I thought he would churn out a lot more runs after that. Instead, it's not exaggerating to say he's spent his last few test series and especially since the World Cup, playing ODI/T20 innings. His defense and shot selection have regressed significantly so that when he does need to lower the tempo from hyper-McCullum to a more regular pace... well he's just had so little practice playing that way this year. Thrusting bat and pad forward together hopefully as he did against Hazelwood here is not the way he was defending 18 months ago

... and has captaincy has followed exactly the same path.

Unless the pink ball really goes crazy this has been a very disappointing tour for NZ. Is it too early to start thinking about changes to the team for the SL series and return Aus series?

I'm thinking
