Marsh has way more Test match credentials than Khawaja when they recalled him. He'll probably be fine. Hope he keeps making ducks or tons though because, y'know, it's funny. It's nice to have test cricketers that require no effort to make observations about them (this is why Shane Watson was good for the game).

The only bad way you can select Shaun Marsh is to take him on tour as a reserve batsman and try to use him to stop collapses and protect the players in the order just after him. That would be ****ing lunacy.

In other news I think we will be upset if Pattinson is chosen over Siddle. A few of our batsman don't seem to be able to handle 145kms bowling even on roads.

....?

Anyway I'd be boring and go for Siddle unless Australia back Hazlewood to bowl long spells and not get injured. Pattinson makes the team look better in theory but Siddle slogging away all afternoon and probably getting Kane out for 5 would be perfect for Australia.

Starc-Pattinson-Hazlewood looks both awesome and like a patient list.

Siddle would be worth having in just for his experience alone given how much experience this team has already lost this year, Starc as leader of the attack right now is a cringeworthy prospect.

I want to comment on something all the centurions did (except Voges but no one cares about him). They started quickly, and then settled down. From my own experience it is hard to start slowly and speed up. Perhaps this is a conscious decision by some of these players and a new micro trend.

@DaemonneededonCW - yeah but it's Mitch Marsh. He's a superb 5th bowler but I wouldn't want to rely on him too much. He does tend to get taken apart as often as he gets that first over wicket. He's best used as an experiment rather than a rock imo.
NZ would prefer to face Siddle. Pattinson blew us away on the last tour.
four years ago we had two batsmen, a brownlie in his favourite place to bat and we were on green decks.

Pattinson is a future ATG but right now I'd lean towards Siddle unless they trust Hazlewood to bowl the big spells. We faced 155+ last test and 150 at Brisbane and did ok. It's more the hoop under lights I'm concerned about.

Guptil got out to the raw pace of Johnson in the 4th inning and the raw pace of Starc in the 2nd. McCullum seemed unable to catch up with a few as well.

Who exactly are our batsman on this tour.

Latham looks good for about 40 every time he bats
Guptill for about 20
Kane and Ross - well yeah
Baz - no consistency
Watling - has not fired.

This time we have 3 batsman (Latham, Ross, Kane) as well.

We are vulnerable to a collapse if Pattinson is on song. Especially since we only bat down to 6.

Australia's attack could be incredible in a few years' time if Pattinson puts his injury issues behind him. Starc and Haze will iron out some of the flaws they have at the moment, + a fit Pattinson is a scary scary thought.

guptill got out to swing and front foot plonking in the first innings. didn't see the second.

baz sucks at starting and came into 155+kph bowling. he's previously biffed johnson and steyn around (and tait in that T20) so he can play speed.

raw speed doesn't knock over this lot, simple good bowling does. swing at pace, good areas and if johnson was at his ashes peak then the bouncers would destroy nz (and everyone) too but thankfully that didn't happen.

patto isn't quicker than starc anyway last i saw. if he plays and does well it will be because of his ***y ***y swing and good areas.

Which is exactly Patto's MO. Or at least it was before all the injuries.

It's been four years since Pattinson's debut, and he's only played one of his 13 tests in the last year and a half. :(

It's sad because those first 18 months were full of injuries, but he still played 12 test matches in them.
