Why would Australia be to bothered about Taylor meandering to a personal milestone?

They are in no rush to bat are they?
I don't really expect Australia to play for a draw though. There's still enough time for all three results and I still think a win would be in Australia's mind.

Of course they are if they want to win. Need to set a target; NZ meandering along makes that a lot tougher -- they have to bat even quicker in the second dig to set the target they want to set in the overs they want to bowl NZ out in. Which adds risk, and increases the likelihood of them collapsing.

Given that we all slam the comms when they make a "well teams can score at 12 an over in T20s these days, so they can totally chase 220 in a session" statement, because, you know, they're different formats and you can counter it by bowling more defensively and having men back on the boundary, I'm amazed at the amount of people pretending that Taylor could smash every ball because he's on 290 not out and players can score at 12 an over in T20s these days.
Yes this is of course true, but it got to the point where Taylor was facing Smith/Lyon and where he needed to hit maybe 2 or 3 boundaries to get to 300 and was able to face a number of deliveries.

You can't deny that there are players in the world (Joe Burns...) who would look to use their feet and target the shortish straight boundaries for 6s.

I realise that's not Ross's strength anymore but I don't think it's the craziest thought.

Arguably Smith should have given Taylor the 300, because odds are Baz would declare before he passed 302 anyway . Australia batting earlier is certainly in their interests.

Of course, but they have just spent 2 days struggling to get wickets, they should know an Aussie win was pretty unlikely. I think they will be content to go into next week one test up knowing worst case scenario they draw the test. We will see how positive they are soon enough!

Agreed.

He for whatever reason decided to prioritise his triple rather than quick runs this morning, which was silly.

Immense innings, but he slowing down was what the team did not need this morning.

It suited Australia perfectly though, so doubt they were to upset about his strategy.
Well I don't really agree, I'm saying he should have prioritised his triple EVEN MORE. I didn't really care about him slowing down, I just cared about him turning down opportunities to try and smoke 666666 off Lyon/Smith and choosing to rely on Trent Boult to bat forever instead. But in the end maybe he should've relied on Boult to bat forever...

Fair enough, if it was Misbah batting when Lyon was bowling:ph34r:

God I'm not sure I can stay awake through another generic Australian ATG masterclass that Sky offer every lunch break.

So the mission this session is ummmmmmmmm Get Warner. Any way possible - run out at the non-striker's end, waste-high-full-toss, trips over a seagull, don't care. Just get him out.

Well done NZ and taylor.

I hope steve learns a lesson about this 1st innings declaration/bat to declare crap.
Yep. Playing positive is great, throwing wickets away and declaring about 100 runs and an hour and half sooner than you needed to is being too generous.

I know it's annoying getting driven but Boult just needs to keep pitching it up to Warner. Not quite full as that last one of course.

Wooo!
