**Official** New Zealand in Australia 2015

This.

The difference is Australia's bowlers can actually threaten in unhelpful conditions, whereas NZ quicks are useless unless they've got a greentop and cloud cover
This is crap, but I agree in general that people whining about the pitch and the toss need the recognise that the main reason why NZ have been spanked is because their bowling in this series has been abysmal.

I hesitate to respond to you, but just a question for the group, what other countries can be effective in Australia. England have had good runs there I guess in certain series but not all attempts.
Even Australia have struggled at times. The 2012 Aus v SA series was really high scoring, England got loads of runs in the 10/11 Ashes and India scored heavily last year. Australia 13/14 are the only attack that has consistently done well in the last three/four years in Australia.

Did well against Sri Lanka even though their squad got mauled by injuries, 2011/12 against India also had good success.

it's not the pitches, or rather it's not all the pitches. aussie conditions favour genuine speed a little more than every other test nation yeah because there is usually (but not always) less seam and swing on offer but we've seen pace bowlers from not Pakistan take important clusters of wickets in the likes of the UAE and also some of the nastier Indian grounds for pace bowling ffs, and those decks don't have the bounce or pace Aussie pitches have.

Unless you bowl 145kph plus in Australia you have to stay in good areas (like McGrath, Hazlewood, Anderson in that Ashes etc). New Zealand can't. They're not even erring full, which would be a crime in New Zealand as well. Australia also arguably have the best raised group of batsmen as an entire domestic system against just pace and bounce in the world to contend with and they all love hitting bowlers through the line until they lose their line and length. Even a normal and semi-developed in Australia player like Dean Brownlie becomes a world beater on these decks.

Long story short, bringing half fit 135kph bowlers to Australia always ends in tears, and if they continue to drop shot Sri Lanka will pile up 500 later on in New Zealand too.

It's disappointing since we've been laughing at almost every team coming to New Zealand and bowling way too short (then crying about flat pitches and the kookaburra if they're called England) and now New Zealand has gone to Australia and begun testing the no mans land area of the pitches out instead of keeping it full.

I don't even mind the pitches. You can do well on them no matter what you bowl (even offies/finger spin if you're Lyon, Swann or Vettori) if your team does what is required.

New Zealand are bowling crap.

Seemed really weird for Wagner to be left out in the first place, Bracewell is just so terrible.

Warner's interview on ABC radio was super interesting. He actually seems like a genuinely nice guy.

Obviously dumb as **** and carries on like a pork chop on the field but that's great too.

he seems a bit smarter now than he did a few years ago

and TAB is already offering 6.50 for the draw... not much faith in NZ's batting

First thing I'll say is I think it's pathetic how gleefully some people have taken to sticking the boot into McCullum this series. He's received a lot of positive press over the last 18 months and as is often the case there's then a backlash. The clear inference being that he's getting his comeuppance for daring to talk about positive cricket, stick his head above the parapet and try to embody a competitive but not cynical or ugly spirit of cricket, and trying to engender this in others. There's a lot of miserable people around that can only sneer and wait for a slip-up before piling on.

With that disclaimer, if ever there's a time for leadership it's when you've bowled terribly on day 1, despite expectations to the contrary, and you're now far behind in the game. From late on the first day in Brisbane I felt our bowlers looked self-conscious and a little embarrassed which, while understandable, isn't a very helpful frame of mind for picking yourself up and playing a lot better on day 2. Instead of pulling together NZ has progressively degenerated into a rabble over the subsequent five days of the series (barring some reasonable batting from the top three in Brisbane). It's the usual story when things are going bad - you start to get misfields and dropped catches too. This is exactly the scenario where a good leader proves their worth. Yeah I'm sure it's pretty damn tough when your senior bowlers are letting you down, you're away from home and receiving criticism left right and centre, and can't catch a break with the umpires either but... that's what McCullum was made captain for - his leadership.

Even if he's the best of men I'm sure he's stewing inside about this series so far. Time to find a way to translate that into on-field performance.

The only thing that makes me chuckle these days when looking at the Aus-NZ scorecards is that West Indies are coming here next

New Zealand has bowled well enough for a few overs before like this but then lost it again. if they can continue this then they can give themselves a chance to win the session with the ball.

Why couldn't we have bowled like this at the start of the first test? Oh, I know why. Underdone. My bad.
