Yeah there was enough in the air for Hazeldine to have asked some good questions of Conway today. A shame how terrible his economy can get when he tries too hard to escape his destiny of nondescript Canterbury Plunket pacer.

Missed these, probably only available on pooch. From the fours package, he bowled short, wide, leg side and pretty much everywhere. Bit of a spray can. The highlights package is definitely not a good way to judge a player.

STAGS CALL-UP FOR WATSON, McKAY, TOOLE

National first-class champions the Stags have made four changes to their first-round squad, having lost Ross Taylor and Blair Tickner to the BLACKCAPS T20 International squad, left-armer Ben Wheeler to a groin strain, and uncapped CDU19 and NZU19 allrounder Joey Field dropping out of the squad with a niggle.

With regulars Doug Bracewell, Bevan Small, Adam Milne, Kieran Noema-Barnett and Will Young all still on the injury bench, the return of frontline batsman Tom Bruce will be especially welcomed by the squad.

Following rehabilitation from minor keyhole surgery on his right knee in late September, Bruce passed a fitness test last week, and is looking forward to his first appearance for the Stags this season.

Of the three uncapped players selected, 25-year-old Taranaki right-arm medium pacer Ryan Watson, a former NZ U19 representative, is the only player to have previously been named in a Plunket Shield squad, having carried the drinks in seven matches.

Nelson right-arm paceman Jarrod Mckay, 19, steps up from CD A and CD U19 representation while promising young quick Ray Toole — who turns 22 tomorrow, the firat day of a potential debut match — received his first CD A callup in February, after impressing for Manawatū.Born in South Africa, Toole played grade cricket in Melbourne, Australia, before moving to Palmerston North to undertake a Bachelor of Business Studies.

Said CDCA High Performance Manager Lance Hamilton, “This is a great opportunity for some younger, less experienced players to step up and test where they are at with regards to first-class cricket.

“In an ideal situation, you wouldn’t have so many potential debutants in one first-class fixture, but injuries create opportunity. It’s an exciting time for the new guys and an opportunity for them to stake a claim for the future.”

GREG HAY — captain, Nelson

TOM BRUCE — Taranaki

DANE CLEAVER— wicketkeeper, Manawatū

WILLEM LUDICK — Nelson

JARROD MCKAY— Nelson

AJAZ PATEL— Hawke’s Bay

RAYMOND TOOLE — Manawatū

SETH RANCE — Wairarapa

BRAD SCHMULIAN — Hawke’s Bay

BEN SMITH — Whanganui

RYAN WATSON — Taranaki

GEORGE WORKER — Manawatū

What are the chances that Conway leapfrogs Will Young?

Ray Toole is a great name. I wish Bill Lawry, Tony Grieg and Ritchie Benaud were commenting on that match.

Haha, was just thinking this and how cruel it would be on Will Young, were Taylor to retire just as Conway made himself a must-pick. I tend to think Young will be first cab off the rank on account of his work for NZA, but I think he'll get nearly as many chances to establish himself as he would've had Conway decided to stay in SA.

Conway smashing it as usual, four fours in a row off Hazeldine (one of them was a edge). Tom Blundell and Conway were going along smoothly till Tom given out LBW. As usual there is a lot of shaking of head, showing the bat suggesting he hit it to the camera. I think the NZC should get a bit tougher and tell the players to walk if given out rather than throw a hiss. Given out is out, the umpire isn't going to change his decision. I understand the players are disappointed and lot rides on their form but seen too many players showing their displeasure in the middle. Umpires at first class are not all that great we know that but then neither are the players. Like there's less quality in play at first class so is umpiring. It's as simple as that.
Just looked like it hit him well outside off stump to me.

And I disagree, the NZ domestic umpire stare is one of our great traditions!

Conway seems to be entering the god-mode phase of his career. Shame he didn’t come over 12 months earlier, would love to see him get a shot this season.

I think Conway could end up opening.

I'd be gutted for Will Young if he lost his spot to Conway. I also wonder about the merits of trying Conway as opener as that really is the only spot we don't have fully nailed down in the batting order. Though sometimes batsmen struggle with the change

Conway opened quite a bit coming through the age groups in South Africa.

He's playing in the NZ XI against England.
Ah, OK. I was under the impression that side was made up of players not playing for their provincial sides. But, looking at the make up of it today, I am seemingly wrong.

I hope he has a good season.

Conway is available only by next season and it's a long time away. I'd like him to maintain his form and break into BCs but a year in cricket is a very long time. The same applies for Young as well.

Terrific knock by Conway with the backs to the wall stuff but can't believe Canterbury bowling has become so bad in the last two years. All they bowl is short and wide or down leg. What's going on with Canterbury of late? Is this the best bowling attack they've got?

Hazeldine 8 overs for 78 runs... that's considered expensive even in a T20 game.

Double-ton up for Conway. The door is open for a triple if the engine room can hang around for long enough.

Canterbury's lost Jamieson who was their main wicket-taker in recent years. Henry hasn't been that flash in domestic FC cricket for a couple of seasons and Nuttall, as discussed above, is looking quite gentle these days. Bit surprised Henry Shipley hasn't gotten a run so far this season.

Yeah looking like a huge score on the cards. Is the pitch flat? The Basin has been for tests in recent years but looking at the highlights it just seems like mostly wayward bowling.

Pretty shocking at have two of your first choice seamers going for 6+ an over (and Hazledine almost at 10...)

Will be interesting to see if Henry can do something with the new ball
