***Official*** New Zealand Domestic Season 2019/20

Being serious.

Unless we're annointing him too early.

Someone like Ravindra, I would be wanting him to be in a place to make his debut at about age 21, with minimum 2 FC centuries behind him (preferably a minimum of 3 for a more competitive position, Phillips already has 4 in the more competitive middle order).

So that would be by next spring/pre-Xmas (if we are touring).

Ravindra has 7 more FC games this season to get into this sport of position (5 Plunket Shield and 2 NZ A games). Possible, but not nailed on, in fact not necesarily even likely. A lot of work still to do, might need half or all of next season to be have a competitive body of work behind him.

Pretty sure Ravindra would already have played 15 tests if nzfan was calling the shots. :p
:) I'm a fan no doubt but no I don't think he should be picked for another couple of years. He should have a good run at domestic level and play NZ A for a year or so before he can get to the senior team. Besides Black Caps have the best team ever, last thing I would think they need a 20 year old to make a difference.

Agreed... he needs at least couple of years to develop. What I meant is for local cricket to provide him with opportunities not just with the bat but with the ball as well. Try and recognize why NZ Cricket has invested in his bowling.

Besides I'm not only about Ravindra, I believe Ben Sears would be ready in two years to come and so will Finn Allen. Just that Ravindra has been given good opportunities and to a certain extent he's made decent use of it.

Black caps in two years to come or three would break the past barriers if we have good bench strength. The bench strength can only be developed if younger players are given consistent run and not binned after one or two bad games which is what is happening with the likes of Finn Allen, Ben Sears etc.

Yeah it’s more a case of squeezing him in atm ... I would think Conway will be first in line for Raval’s spot once he qualifies.

Thinking back to Williamson’s introduction to the team (way too early imo), I don’t think there’s any harm in giving Ravindra a few more years, even until he’s 22 or so, to introduce him. But wow, that innings yesterday, what a talent.

And Young will probs replace Taylor so it is a hard road ahead for Ravindra unless he makes a shock debut for India's tour and succeeds. Which could happen if Raval goes down and Ravindra does well in LA. Stead wouldn't do that though.

is conway an opener? because i always thought he was a #3. seems strange to just assume the selectors will ask him to open in tests immediately.

they were grooming will young for it in nz a before his injury, but with his lost time and ross' impending retirement i think they'll wait and slot him in at #4 now.

If he's scored runs in domestic cricket I'd pick Ravindra for the ODI series against Ireland in June/July next year. Don't have to play him against the big teams but you have a diet of Ireland, West Indies, Bangladesh, and Pakistan after that which wouldn't be the worst time to introduce a guy like him.

Good idea.

Apparently he was an opener in SA before he hit the Wellington dream team of Papps and Woodcock.

Yes, agree also, good idea.

Made me look up the FTP.

It looks like an ODI tour to Ireland and WI in June (of 3 ODIs each).

Then there is a test tour to Bangladesh in August (2 test matches). This would be the ideal time to introduce him, actually. Raval poor v spin, Ravindra himself a handy spin bowler. But, I have the feeling he won't be ready for test selection by August (E.g. at the end of this domestic season).

U19 world cup this season

PLayers from the recent U19 series v Bangladesh and Australia. In action in Fergus Hickey (multi-day cricket).
Harry Dickson (Right-arm medium-fast): 6/83 for Counties Manukau v Hamilton.

Lellman 82 for BOP v Northland, (also Pomare and Pringle with solid contributions)

Agree. Could see a path similar to Latham's early NZ career, sometimes 13/14th player in white ball squad for a couple of seasons before stepping into opening in text XI. Less pressure if "dropped", gets used to the team environment.

I would pick him for Bang test tour. But I would have picked him for SL tour as a 15th / 16th player. Needs to get early sub-continent experience as he could be a key part of sub-contitent test XI as a batting all-rounder (Evan Gray role for anyone old enough to remember mid 80s tours) before forcing into home text XI.

Yeah, that whole winter's a good idea to introduce Ravindra.

Yes good score for Phillips and great figures for N. Smith too - 10 overs 3/41 when your side concedes 310, though all three wickets did come at the death.

I see Under 19 squad member Jesse Frew is 12th man for CD. He must have moved from Canterbury in the off-season. His dad played first class cricket, mum played for NZ & Nathan Astle is his uncle.
