Good news, the MRI scan has come up clear so doesn't look like a longterm injury though he'll probably be rested for now so as not rush him back.

Phew.

An event cannot beg a question. Only an argument can beg one.

Literally it means that the argument relies on an appeal to the origin or principle, or assumes that something is true even though most people would have thought that it was the point actually at issue.

"Jones is now the wrong person to open and Strauss is the right one"

"Why?"

"Because Strauss is now the right person to open and Jones is the wrong one" is a question-begging answer because it simply assumes the truth of the proposition as being proof of its truth.

"Because the idea of turning Jones into a Gilchiristian pinch-hitter isn't working and in English conditions at least we now think a proper opener would be a better idea" does not require you to accept something you may not yet agree with before you can accept it
as a logical answer, so it does not beg the question.

Cheers,

Mike
Well there you go! So "begging the question" involves use of a circular argument. All these years I've been merrily using it as a synonym for (as you pointed out) raising the question. I bet I'm not alone in that either.

Always an education on CW. :D

You're certaily not alone. It's a very common solecism.

Perhaps caused by the fact that in some cases, it could be seen to be equivalent to raising the question, even though that's actually a consequence.

"Tendulkar is a better batsman than Lara"

"Why?"

"Because he has a higher average".

You'd be quite correct to point out that such an answer begs the question. The question in this case being the assumption that having a higher average necessarily means you're better. Having pointed out that the answer begs the question, you might then choose to argue about the assumption, which would indeed be raising the question which was previously begged.

Cheers,

Mike

England's fielding was sub-par, and they cannot afford to continue this way against the Aussies. Do you think Jon Lewis should play the next match or would you choose Simon Jones? Or maybe both, in place of one specialist batsman.
Lewis has done enough to maintain his place thus far. Playing Simon Jones would give england a long tail, plus i dont think he will be playing because he has an injury.

England's team for Sundays game should be:

Trescothick
Strauss
Vaughan
Pietersein
Flintoff
Collingwood
Jones
Ali
Gough
Harmison
Lewis

Tis cool, tis cool...

Can`t wait to watch the one-dayer tonight. It`s been too long since I`ve watched some cricket. Actually I`ve got a mad day coming up. Indoor match, girlfriend`s house, then ODI.

And that boys and girls, is why you get your work done early. :)

reckon Vaughan will put Bangladesh in if he wins the toss, given England are playing Australia tomorrow?

I don't think there's any chance of Vaughan winning the toss today.

tbh i think some of the better fielders might have taken that from Hayden
Taller fielders maybe, I thought the dive was a fair effort.

Bangladeshi bowlers getting plenty of movement early on, at least five or six have moved enough to make the batsmen miss or mis-time the ball.

Geez, that was an awful shot. Almost a half-volley, should've put it away fairly easily. Bangladesh doing the right thing though, pitching it up full enough to take advantage of the swing and hitting the seam. Both LBWs plumb, the batsmen really seem to be forgetting the basics at the moment.
