International Debutant
IPL stock watch

Hot: Jaipur and Delhi

Up: Mumbai and Mohali

Down: Chennai and Kolkatta

Busted: B'lore and Hybad

Jaipur has been sensational, while Delhi looks good despite bad games here and there

Mumbai and Mohali are showing a steady upward movement

Chennai and Kolkatta seem to be losing steam

B'lore and Hybad look busted

Still 8 more games to go, which means that there is a possibility of a shake up .... teams like Mumbai, Kolkatta and B'lore who are at 2 wins each from 6 games will have to win 5 games from the next 8 to given themselves a decent chance for a semis berth

Top 4 after 6 games: Jaipur, Delhi, Chennai and Mohali

How good are the Royals? So glad I jumped on them early. Frothin.
Inspite of their being atop the table, its still a surprise. If they continue to be on top it will be one great argument against "T20 is just a batsman's game".

  • The Rajasthan Royal's have just one batsman in the top ten highest rungetters and he is at number nine !! - Watson. The other batsmen they have in the top 30 are Yousuf Pathan at #14, Smith at #16 and R Jadeja at #30 !!
  • They have just one batsman in the top ten batsmen with the best average and he is at number ten ! - Watson again. They have Smith at #11. The next batsman they have in the top 25 is Asnodkar at #16 and R Jadeja at #29 !!

A team with Watson, Yousuf Pathan, and the completely unknown Asnodkar and R Jadeja are topping the table !! Graeme Smith, their only real star has had one fifty and has a strike rate under 120.

They do not have the best strike rate, the highest number of sixes and any centurion.

Even their bowlers (barring Tanvir yesterday) have been unspectacular.

- Of the 13 bowlers who have an economy under 7 they have only 1 (Tanveer).
- Of the next 17 with economy between 7-8 , they have just 1
- Of the 15 bowlers between 8-9, however they have 3.
- Of the 16 bowlers with economy over 9 they have NONE !

Note : Qualification, minimum five overs bowled.

Clearly, here is a team that has no super stars and yet are on top because of everyone chipping in. Whether this kind of sum-total-of little-efforts will continue to keep them on top, is still to be seen but so far their results have been spectacular even though individual performances my not have set the skies alight.

Not that I disagree with your conclusions in the main, but you've overlooked Graeme Smith .

Shane Watson is easily the best all-rounder in the tournament. Shane Warne, easily the best captain. So they're not (in retrospect) doing too badly in talent, while getting the best out of everyone.

BTW if Dimitri Mascarenhas plays - then Watson-Dimitri-Yusuf-Warne is probably the best set of T20 all rounders to be fielded by any team.

Thanks for pointing out. Corrected.

I am not so sure about the talent (as recognised by the respective country selectors). They have one current test player in Graeme Smith amongst the batsmen and Tanveer as the off and on bowler from Pakistan. Whats more, from India, which must contribute minimum seven of any playing eleven they do not have a single current player and Kaif, the former international seems too rusty no where in contention for a return.

The point is that, on paper this looks by and far the weakest team and yet they top the table. Its amazing and very creditable.

I think the fact that they are playing so well as a team could be a big factor and Warne (and I suspect Smith ) may have a lot to do with this. Its also possible that if this team had some Indian superstars (read Yuvraj, Harbhajan etc) Warne may not have been able to get this bonding that we are seeing.

One is already hearing of rifts in the Kolkata side and Hyderabad may not be very well knit too.

This is not on any website. I read it on the newsbar of Headlines Today- that large orange bar with white fonts (since you too are in India, you must have come across it). That programme came between 12:00pm and 12:25 pm and they were discussing the Warne-Ganguly tussle as well as these new comments from Gul. I didn't watch any other channel then- and left shortly after, and returned now.
Yeah...media was misinterpreting him I think...either intensionally or otherwise...what Gul said was not offensive at all...

Zaheer has struck some form here in the IPL. He's picked up at least two wickets a match, regained a lot of pace and bowled with bulldozer force to help his team's chances a lot. He's also a lot more agile on the field and his throwing arm has improved. A national recall, maybe?
Not recall really, he was out for injury...Ishant and Zaheer have no real competitors at this moment for opening bowling in ODIs.

Shaun Pollock is a strong contender for Man Of Match. He's taken two wickets for 16 and scored 33 runs at over a run a ball, with two huge sixes. I wonder how many still picked him (and as captain) despite his dreadful run of form earlier in NW18's IPL fantasy league.
I picked him as captain at the start...Now he's not the captain any more...still is there in the team...

Absolute disgrace of a pitch. How dare they make a pitch that gives assistance to the bowlers so they can make the batsman work for their runs, and at times made to look foolish. Absolute disgrace and it's just not cricket.
So if the pitch assists batsmen then it's a good cricket pitch, but if it assists bowlers then it isn't!!!....So you might have liked the first match between KKR and BRC more than yesterday's MI vs. DD...but I did the opposite...

If you never want pitches to assist bowlers, why have them at all? Just place some bowling machines and then let batsmen have a go...

Edit: Weldone caught SJS bowled DoG 0.....Finger raised by umpire Pasag :)

Turn on the old sarcasm radar, I think....
