Whatever it takes!!!

I stand corrected on my stance of not dropping Parthiv Patel as Wicket Keeper. Those who said that 'Dhoni was the man' and according to one very respected member of CW who said the following about Dhoni's Wicket Keeping :-

"....Dhoni was a revelation. He was always at the right height to take the ball. He moved rather than dived and took the ball in both hands even when it was wide, again a great quality. The ball seemed to land in his hands ever so gently. If I had to find a fault, I would say that initially he appeared a bit flamboyant, tossing the ball to the slips almost at the same instant that it landed in his gloves, a dangerous habit. But he quickly stopped doing that and settled down to a great display. Very impressive and no one had talked of his keeping so far...."
Don't forget his Gilchristesque batting. Can't play a cut and can't play a pull and yet he is our new batting God. I seriously wish he actually played some shots with the horizontal bat. Then he could be a real hope at no.7.

It is true that I had said he kept very well on the occasion that is being quoted. The reason for why I said is simple, he did keep very well that day.

Just like my recent post is about Dhoni's keeping during the last match we saw against Sri Lanka.

I dont see why one should say, Dhoni is a great keeper or Dhoni is a lousy keeper. Its too early in his career for anyone to make such statements. One can only comment on how he keeps on a day, during a series and so on.

There is no contradiction in this.

What amazes me is when people tend to speak , particularly of young Indian players in such with such firm conviction as to how they should replace the existing established stars. I rarely comment on Indian young players and have often declined saying clearly that I cant since I havent seen so-an-so.

I do not form an opinion based on what I read written by others. I read it yes. I believe it to the extent, I belive the credibility of the source. Thus if Boycott recommends a young players potential, it definitely impresses me more than when the dozens who have sprouted as sports critics in Indian media. I prefer, in that case to see for myself.

Nothing wrong about that whatsoever, in my humble opinion.

When I wrote that Dhoni kept well, I explained what he did well and also showed a level of surprise "was a revelation" confirming that I did not know or believe before that about his capabilities.

Similarly when I wrote the other day about his shoddy keeping to Harbhajan, I explained again what he did which appeared so wrong. Again, I also expressed that this may not be as bad as he will keep all the time.

I am not one of those who come with preconcieved notions and then use facts or fiction to justify them.

I remember Lala Amarnath's famous words to Narottam Puri, "Dr Puri, I am not one of those who will change his opinion every day. If I said this is a dead wicket and will result in a high scoring draw on the first day, I will say that throughout the test. I dont care if the test has finally ended in three days, I am a man who sticks to his words !"

Sorry folks, I am a bit different from such high levels of consistency :D

PS : I was asked many months ago to write, for CW, sketches on the Indian stars and those on the fringes. One of the reasons I did not finally write these was that I didn't feel comfortable writing about youngsters like Raina, Venugopal, Yadav etc who I had never seen by then. Everyone has a right to there opinions and I have a right to mine but I try to ensure that they ARE my own as far as possible Sometimes, accidents of having arrived in this world too late to have witnessed all of it makes it difficult.:)

Well Done WI on a really great effort to finally win after 10 matchers with relatively inexperienced team.

Dhoni is an as aweful wicketkeeper as Parthiv and not even half the batsman Parthiv was.

Good on Chanders to finally get some runs since the first Test. Well played Joseph, Banks and practically all the bowlers too.

Wow that really sets up the final game between India and WI.

Well done to the WI, and Chanderpaul scoring is great to see.

Looks like the Windies dont plan on being a walk-over. It's interesting how this is the first ODI win for the West Indies 12 matches and that came from the second-string team. Maybe the superstars back home are starting to feel the heat a little bit.

West Indies, in this tournament have looked the best fielding side of the three and in a low scoring, relatively, tournament, that must count for something.

Not undeserving are Windies to be in a position to challenge India (Gawd help the collective Indian soul) for a position in the finals.

Good on the Windies for creating an upset and setting up an interesting match against India , what a shame Lara, Sarwan ,Gayle and co are not there !!

I hope they are at World Cup 2007 - Otherwise the hosts will be fighting for the Wooden spoon among test playing countries !!

India in disarray.....
33/2 in 11 overs
Sehwag LBW Butler for 6 runs in 23 balls.
WI bowled good line to him. most between middle and leg.
Laxman out cheaply, caught behind.
This partnership between Dravid and Yuvaraj is crucial, but I don't think this will be a high scoring match.

I must ask, given the Indians' Number 8 position in the ODI rankings, but a higher Number 3 in Tests, why can't the Test regulars be a regular fixture in the ODI side? Laxman and Gambhir can stick out ther and score a lot more than the two regular ODI specialists- Gambhir also scores a lot quicker. And why is Ganguly often treated as the answer to India's ODI batting woes? He's not looked convincing at all, and his weaknesses in Tests seem to have followed him even in ODI's, coupled with his problems fielding and running between wickets.

"We need seven batsmen because we are not getting enough runs"- that's the excuse for this lopsided formula. But what's the point in picking seven batsmen with at least two weak links? Would it not help to have just five specialists who actually score? Besides, the Pathans, Dhonis and bodybuilders from Bhopal have alternate skills, good batting basics and enough power to play as power-players in this team, which has often been found short of attack power in batting. After all, opposing fielding sides just have to get Sehwag out and the rest of the batting side poses no threat- they're just trying to stick their necks out rather than attack!

Yuvraj and Kaif are at the crease. Let's just hope at least one of them gets a century. They have all the time in the innings and enough speed between wickets for that. All they need to do is apply themselves, the way they did in the Natwest final in 2002.
