Punjab have won by 3 wickets. That long tail was no weakness, as Dharmani managed to stay unbeaten on 88. Dramatic result- they have a VERY good chance of winning the final, as they have more power and flair than Railways, hence more potential to win matches. Then again, Railways play well as a team and are quite efficient.

Mumbai losing is a big shock
They didn't help themselves by playing so many reckless shots when not needed. They've done it all along, even when they won the Ranji Trophy twice since 2002-03- they were rescued by the lower order each time. Not so lucky this time.

Meanwhile, Dhoni smashed 109 off 75 balls, yet couldn't help get his team a first-innings lead. He couldn't repeat the feat as the match didn't continue on the fourth day. Good sign ahead of the ODI series before Pakistan and SL.

No play possible on a rainy day

March 21, 2005

Haryana 453 and 26 for 0 lead Jharkhand 308 (Dhoni 109, Mishra 6-66) by 171 runs
No play was possible on the fourth day in Chandigarh owing to rain.

Himachal Pradesh 50 for 1 v Services
The trend continued at Dharamsala as the fourth day's play was called off without a ball being bowled.

Of all the players to watch, this is how they've done-
  • Gagandeep Singh- Bowled the in-cutters and out-cutters to good effect, getting 8 wickets in the match. He gave away nothing on either side and his dogged resistance with the bat helped stitch a partnership with anchorman Dharmani who lpayed the match-winning knock of 86
  • Vikram Singh- Bowled well to take 3/48 in the first innings, but got nothing in the second, save a decent economy rate.
  • Sodhi- Took two wickets for 64, didn't get too many runs in either innings (he got injured before he came out to bat) and didn't bowl in the second innings.
  • Yuvraj Singh- Maybe he misses playing the Test matches against Pakistan a little too much- he was out for zero in the first innings and played out a very slow but resilient 42 in the second, but an altercation with that heckler shold have been avoided.
  • Pankaj Dharmani- The steady hand in a flamboyant lineup, he batted well under pressure and was calm throughout the innings, which has been his strength for a very long time as a batsman.
  • Sairaj Bahutule- He took 4 wickets in the first innings and kept things tight in the second, but that wasn't of much avail. He didn't get too many with the bat and dropped one catch too many.
  • Ramesh Powar- Played a rapid 37 on the opening day, but couldn't convert that start into a big score. Bowled well to the Punjab batting side, but didn't do anything of note with bat or ball in the second innings of either team.
  • Salvi- The same bowler who was running hot in FC matches in 2002 and 2003 played his first game since his latest injury and struggled, while the experienced Ajit Agarkar took four wickets.
  • Wasim Jaffer- Disappointed in both innings.
  • Amol Mazumdar- Played a vital innings of 75 on the first day, but played a rash shot in the second innings, just like the rest of his teammates.
  • Vinayak Samant- Completed his 38th dismissal, equalling a record by Samir Dighe and Sulakshan Kulkarni- still the best wicketkeeper in India.
  • Ambati Rayudu- His horrific season with the bat continued.
  • NP Singh- The dark horse among the pacers, his accuracy and technique of moving the ball were not so effective this time, as he ended up with 1/75.
  • Amit Pagnis- In good form, he got a match-winning score of 98 to follow up his previous score of 48.
  • Sanjay Bangar- Didn't get too many runs, but picked up 2 wickets for 42.
  • Jai Prakash Yadav- The flamboyant hitter didn't get too many, save his 40 in the first innings, but bowled well to take 4 wickets.
  • Murali Karthik- Got a lot more overs to bowl here than he and Parida did in the entire Duleep Trophy (except, probably, the first match) and took 5 wickets for 90.
  • MS Dhoni- While the rest of his batting side floundered, he scored 109 off 75 balls, but that was not enough to take them into the finals.
  • Joginder Sharma- Scored a brisk 38, but got out too soon. Didn't get to bowl much, but picked up no wicket in 15 overs.
  • Sunny Singh- The India U-19 player got a century that gave his side the lead and two points, but his bowling got carted around by Dhoni- he only got 4 overs.
  • Ajay Ratra- Can't say much about his keeping, usually very fast, but scored a vital 40 at number 7.

Thanks for the analysis, Arjun, but as a member of the AAAS I have to object. You have Muzumdar and Bangar as players to watch out for and no AA??? c'mon, even if u don't like the guy, atleast be fair ;-) ...he's definitely closer to the nat'l side than half the players u mention as "players to watch"

Thanks for helping keep this thread active. A pity not too many India supporters here taalk domestic cricket- elsewhere, there is a lot of active discussion involving every member.

You might have guessed, I have never been a big fan of Agarkar, who's not big himself. If I had to watch a fast bowler in action, it would be one of those tall, muscular, lean lads teearing down the ground onto the pitch, then letting the ball loose. A small man doing this looks funny. Not so much if he averages over 45 in Test matches- you can't win Test matches with such bowlers! He's not so close to the Test side these days (luckily) and (hopefully) won't be in ODI's either. He's a player to watch, at least for Mumbai, if not India.

Mazumdar has maintained an average of over 50 for at least 10 years. A mainstay of the Mumbai batting side, he has contributed a lot in many a victory. He has good temperament to play a long innings and is also a good limited-overs batsman. Rather than burn their fingers over Amay Khurasiya, Vijay Bharadwaj and Hemang Badani, this should have been the man to pick for the selectors.

Bangar may be at ease while batting (his preferred strength), he's a better bowler (his more relevant strength). In a limited-overs match, he opened the bowling and bowled straight, even sneaking in the odd bouncer and got a Lankan A-team opener out within the first 15. In contrast, the faster Munaf Patel sprayed the ball all round. He never took his bowling seriously, his batting had one flaw too many and his fielding was just average, but had he bowled more often and tried harder for wickets, he would have lasted longer in the Indian team.

I think you got it wrong, Arjun. I do not doubt (or cannot comment on) the abilities of most players you mentioned. My only contention was that players like Muzumdar and Bangar have a lesser chance of getting into the side than AA. A minor point, really...
As for Bangar, are you seriously suggesting he could have stayed in the side on bowling ability alone?? I think he is a bowler who can succeed only on tracks that offer some help while most ODIs are played on flat tracks; he would get slaughtered.
Anyway, what do u think about this Mishra guy from Punjab ?..the skipper called him the next Harbhajan

Mazumdar is not a bowler, but he's definitely a better batsman than some of those who have played for India in the recent past (Badani, Khurasiya, Bharadwaj, Rohan Gavaskar, out-of-form Yuvraj) and deserves a place as a reserve batsman for the Indian side. There is talk of getting young batting sensation Ambati Rayudu into the national side- but a look at his recent performances (he's had a terrible Ranji season) as well as his batting technique (is there any?), there is no way he should make the India side ahead of the old hand from Mumbai.

Bangar's past it- there's not much he can do now as bowler, batsman or fielder. All I said was that he's a better bowler than he is a batsman, but he lacks pace and power. However, some young bowlers should follow his example and practise their batting.

Agarkar is more likely to make a playing XI than either, but only relatively.

As for Amit Mishra, the Haryana leggie was first picked for a tour match against Zimbabwe (if I remember correctly, at least that was shown on television) and he took 6 wickets in the match, in an innings. He has been considered as an A-team regular and the selectors have been watching him since 2002, when he was only 18. He was picked for a one-day series in Dhaka, which not too many supported, since ODI's are not easy for a legspinner, but he's a good batsman and fielder (better than Kumble) and provides variety in the attack, so he may be considered as Kumble's replacement in ODI's. Then again, there's Yusuf Pathan. Still, Mishra is one player to watch. Not sure who the skipper was- Mongia (Punjab, since you mentioned it), Ganguly or Ratra (Haryana).

From CricInfo's Ranji Plate Group Round-up
The final day's play at Dharamsala was also washed out and the winner - Services - was decided by the spin of a coin. Only 132 minutes of play was possible over the five days. It was a cruel blow to Himachal Pradesh's hopes after a memorable season where they hadn't lost a game and dominated the others. Services had managed only one outright victory all season but with luck at the toss gained themselves a promotion to the Elite Group. The final will be held at Rohtak from March 30.
Silly joke. Expect them to get relegated really quickly.

Serivces will go down back to the plate Division where they belong, this is just stupid
Frankly, that team is just made up of extras from other teams. Moreover, they have too much of other tasks at hand (especially at the borders) to concentrate on their game. Nobody will expect anything fancy from them.

Blame it on the weather......

The skipper was mongia but i believe he was talking about the offie Mishra in the Pujab side, the one who took 3 in the 2nd innings...

The ridiculous Ranji OD series will continue in the final phase in the old 'heyday, a major improvement over the scheduling of the matches in club grounds. The matches will be played in the second week of April. The top teams from the five zones will contest the knock-out phase. While Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Baroda and TN, one may not expect anything special from Orissa, who have profited from points table equations and tiny club grounds, or Bengal and Karnataka, who have struggled. Uttar Pradesh may not have it all smooth sailing either, if Mohammed Kaif doesn't play, which is more likely. Railways and Delhi may be the dark horses of the series.

"Why did they leave me out? I'll show them!" That may be the intent with which Yuvraj Singh should come out when he bats for Punjab. In phenomenal form in the Duleep Trophy, including two centuires on the trot, at nearly a run a ball, and highly effective on the field at point, this man was very close to national selection. Yet, he was kept aside for VVS Laxman and Saurav Ganguly, both of whom were out of form, and out of sorts. They won one match, drew one and lost one- the last result may motivate him to strike back, and strike harder.

Folks, there are two Ranji finals starting tomorrow- Punjab v/s Railways and Haryana v/s Services (more like Haryana will defeat Services). A Northern double is on the cards, and the final of the Plate division maks it easier.
